I Went to See the Ice Tunnel The last Sunday in July was the annual day the ice tunnel opened to the public! After a long heatwave and heavy rain a few days earlier, the organizers went to check on the tunnel just before the event to make sure it still existed. Compared with other years, some of the ice nearer the entrance had melted, so visitors picked their way—sometimes through the riverbed—toward the ice deeper inside. Even as we climbed over uneven ground and logs, cool air flowed up from the river, making it refreshingly chilly! I spent the day enjoying the coolness with a friend who had come along for the occasion, then we headed home. We rode a shuttle bus from town, so the trip there and back felt easy and relaxing—enough time for a nap. (*'▽') I’m already looking forward to next year’s opening day! #Nishiokoppe Village #Event #Summer #Ice Tunnel #Chamber of Commerce Youth Division #Cool Retreat #Refreshing

[A basket full of flowers] At the Roadside Station Hanamu where the flower park is attached Events related to plants! Therefore Held in a gathering design workshop~! "What is Gathering Design?" Participants were excited and fidgety until the workshop started. A flower arrangement made by combining multiple flowers and leafy vegetables. Around the main flowers, in any order you want Flowers and leafy vegetables are attached to each other. With the roots still attached, it is like making a bouquet of flowers Ingredients added later are put inside It was difficult, but it was a fun task that came alive visually. The process of loosening the soil so as not to remove important roots, etc. There was a lot of delicate work, and I used my concentration. I was very happy when the work was completed. By processing the roots, the state when completed is Gathering design that can be maintained. The flowering period of the flowers also seems to be longer than usual. Naga~ku, may it be blooming Scene every day as much as possible. 【I'm taking care of the garden】 Pure Japan Garden "Korakuen" in Nishiokoppe Village. This is a mossy growing area, Restrooms available you can also Restrooms available Spot where you can meet wild birds and squirrels. If you look into the Garden, you will see that this year The garden Mr./Ms. of Yume-eup Forest was engaged in maintenance activities such as picking up fallen leaves. In the private garden of a person who originally ran a forestry company Now it is managed in the Village. The site area is about 8,000 square meters, which is very large. It's hard to take care of. Mr./Ms. in Yumee-e-Mori's garden twice a week, While chatting, we work hard. This year's activities are after Golden Week in May. Squid from the mud of the pond began with the staff of the Town hall. If you visit Korakuen on a rainy day again I found them working with the leaves spread over their heads as umbrellas. Even though I can hear the sound of rain clearly It's almost impossible to say that you're under a tree. It was strange that the raindrops did not fall. From the gap in the sound of the rain, I heard the croaking of a frog that I had never heard before. The members were talking with each other about whether it was the result of cleaning the pond. When you feel the creatures, the garden seems to be alive It makes me happy. Because the heat is going to be severe from now on When working outside, be sure to take measures against the heat. And don't overdo it... You can enter and exit Korakuen for free. It is recommended for a walk to Hotel Mori Yumeura. #Nishiokoppe Village #Garden of Yume-eup Forest #Korakuen Garden #Fallen leaves wide #Pruning #Pine #Moss #Fluffy moss #Care

The Summer Solstice is Cub, The Summer Solstice Cub The summer solstice has passed. Before we knew it, the year has already reached its halfway point… At Guesthouse GA.KOPPER an event welcoming Cub riders took place on the day before and on the day of the solstice! This Solstice Cub event was held for the third time this year. Around 20 participants gathered from inside and outside Hokkaido, including the owner’s Cub friends. Contests to decide who could ride a Cub the latest into the night and a game where riders fitted helmets with buckets of water to see how far they could go without spilling much were met with great excitement. After lively Cub conversations and a delicious dinner, we had not a campfire but a Cub fire! Surrounded by rows of participants’ Cubs riders gathered around the fire, drinks in hand, and chatted animatedly. Then, on the morning of the solstice, with sunrise at 3:44 a.m., the Cubs all took off together toward Mt. Wenshiri. No encounters with bears or rain occurred, and we were relieved that everyone returned safely. We thank the teru teru bozu. Whether it’s one year or several years from now, we look forward to meeting again on some future solstice! #GA.KOPPER #Summer Solstice #Cub #Solstice Cub #hokkaider #Kopper-san #chopper #Cub Fire #Geshibashiri

“Mom”’s CD Debut On the night of Saturday, June 15, friends and fans gathered to celebrate someone’s CD debut, joined by a star-studded lineup and about 70 audience members. The debut artist was Keiko Takahashi. Born and raised in Nishiokoppe Village, she raised five children and has also performed widely as a skoppu shamisen (shovel shamisen) player. Her meeting with singer-songwriter Riku Nakanishi inspired Keiko’s songs, and after six months of intensive training she reached the milestone of a CD debut. She had thought, “I will never sing in front of people in my life,” but listening to a song that reflected her own experiences stirred a desire to sing, she said on stage. On the night of the CD debut, the stage featured guitarists active in the village and the skoppu shamisen players and singers who have performed with Mom. Amid laughter, applause, and occasional call-and-response, the final performer—Mom—confidently sang her song. Some long-time acquaintances were in the audience, and the venue felt lively and warm. The CD is currently being sold by hand. Online sales are planned for the future. Once again, congratulations on your debut, Mom!! Thank you to all the performers for a wonderful stage. #Mom #Mom’s youth is now #CD debut #CD release event #Tour #Nishiokoppe Village #Congratulations

Meditation Time in Nishiokoppe On Saturday, June 8, a yoga and aroma instructor from Mombetsu visited Burari Café! Burari Café has a calming interior and the sunlight coming through the windows felt soft. Because it was hot that day, the breeze flowing in was especially pleasant! In that lovely space, we received a lecture on mindfulness meditation and actually tried meditating. Just closing my eyes and focusing on my breath reminded me again that this is an important time for calming the mind. In the workshop, we also learned how to make an aroma spray! The ingredients aren’t many, and it seems easy to make at home *^^* For the workshop, the essential oils provided were hinoki and yuzu. Both have relaxing effects, and hinoki is said to have deodorizing and insect-repellent properties as well. To close the event, we had a handmade lunch. There was a fluffy omelet baked in the oven and rice mixed with butterbur, along with a lineup of side dishes. The soup contained new onions and ume (Japanese plum)! The tartness of the ume was striking, and I was surprised how well it suited a broth. Thank you for a soothing time! #Nishiokoppe Village #Mindfulness Meditation #Yoga #Aroma #Meditation #Handmade Lunch #Mugwort Cookie #Burari Café

Our Village Beautification Project Saturday, June 8 was a sunny day with hot sunlight beating down. Local businesses, elementary school students, the nursery parents’ association and others took part, planting flower seedlings along the roadside ❀ We planted marigolds. They’re the same color as Setoushi-kun! After the opening ceremony, as with past years’ activities, each team quickly dispersed to their assigned spots. Work progressed with efficient movements as if everyone had already discussed the plan. Some people dug the soil with shovels, others placed the seedlings on the soil, and others covered the seedlings with soil… The planting was finished in less than an hour. It’s a small thing, but seeing flowers along the road really does make you happy. Thank you to the organizing committee members who prepared everything from early morning and to all participants for your hard work! #Nishiokoppe Village #Our Village Beautification Project #Seedling planting #Pansies #Marigolds #Thank you for your hard work in the heat

Light Census Experience On a weeknight, 17 elementary school students gathered at the community center. It wasn’t a secret meeting for the kids but a gathering to take part in the first session of this year’s Wildlife Classroom *'▽' There was a reason we met at night. This mission was to experience a “light census”! The light census, one method for counting animal numbers, was conducted together with the Hunting Area Management Association that carries it out in practice, and we searched for and observed wild animals, including deer. After a short lecture about deer characteristics and other topics, we boarded the bus and set off into the forest 🚌 Some participants looked a little frightened as the forest grew darker, but whenever they spotted an animal they shouted loudly, “There it is!” to report the sighting. Everyone diligently recorded the numbers in their own booklets. Many first graders joined, and some could not yet write tally marks correctly, but they noted their sightings in ways that worked for them. Unexpectedly, we even saw that other animal, but everyone returned safely together ○ Back indoors, we compared the numbers we had found, and the first Wildlife Classroom session came to an end. Although it was within the village, traveling by bus through the night forest was an exciting time! The second session is planned as a camp during the summer break. Look forward to the next report! #Wildlife Classroom #Regional Revitalization Cooperation Corps #Hunting Area Management Association #Nishiokoppe Village #Elementary School Students #Wild Animals #Deer #Population Count #Light Census #We even encountered a bear

Searching for spring in Miyanomori! Just when we thought temperatures would warm toward summer it turned sharply colder on Saturday, May 25. In the past, I explored around Nishiokoppe Shrine with Mr. Takada, who once served as the regional revitalization team’s wood-learning (mokuiiku) coordinator and as a forestry curator for the Board of Education. Since bear sighting reports last spring, Miyanomori has been a place we haven’t had many chances to enter. The snow has completely disappeared, and grasses are growing vigorously as we walked, spotting the white flowers that bloom in spring. With the pocket field guide Mr. Takada gave me in hand, I looked down at the ground and up into the trees to observe them. If you listen closely, you can hear bird calls between the rustling of leaves. People around the village often teach me the names of flowers and wild plants, but I struggle to remember them. Little by little, I hope to learn by comparing photos with real specimens, sometimes tasting or smelling them and using my five senses. I enjoy walking alone, but it’s also fun to stroll with a few people and listen to their voices. Thank you to everyone who joined us! #Nishiokoppe Village #Miyanomori #nature #spring #wood learning #community education #walk #nature observation #If you find new spruce buds, be sure to touch them

[Giant Setoushi-kun Appears!?] Roadside Station Kam sits along National Route 239. At its entrance a giant Setoushi-kun appears for a limited time! We were able to borrow hay rolls wrapped in white plastic from local dairy farmers in the village, so we decided to go all out and paint Setoushi-kun. When only orange and green were used, passersby puzzled over whether it was a pumpkin or a mandarin… (laughs) Once the eyes were added, it instantly looked like Setoushi-kun! Please stop by and take a look when you pass through! We’ve also included before-and-after photos *^-^* #Nishiokoppe Village #Hokkaido #local mascot #Setoushi-kun #oversized #hay roll #limited time #Roadside Station #Kam

Shibazakura Phlox Marche On May 19, I visited the Phlox Marche held at Shibazakura Takinoue Park. It was the perfect moment of full bloom, and a pink carpet stretched as far as the eye could see.🌸 That day featured a “Local Mascots Gathering,” with booths set up side by side from Omu, Engaru, and Monbetsu. Several large tour buses arrived, and the line for soft serve never seemed to shrink. I was amazed by how many visitors came! At the Nishiokoppe booth, we sold Ezo deer leather crafts, pet food, and drinking yogurt from Milk Design Co. Many people enjoyed the park with their dogs, which helped sales of deer jerky and Achilles sticks for dogs sell well. When the local mascots appeared, many children were delighted. It was adorable to see all the different characters lined up *^-^* Items sold at the Phlox Marche are also available at Hotel Morimu and Roadside Station Kam. How do you get there from Sapporo? A friend is going to visit and asked, “How can I get to Nishiokoppe?” so I made this guide!! The Nishiokoppe Village website lists access information, but I summarized fares and travel times in a table, so please use this as a reference. If you drive, using the expressway takes about four hours. If you use public transport, transfer waiting times can add up, so it may take half a day. This time I’ll introduce a route combining train and bus and a route using buses only. I think the route via Nayoro is the easiest, but there are also express buses from Sapporo to Monbetsu, so coming via Monbetsu is another option. The only public transport serving Nishiokoppe Village is buses.🚌 Roads are safely maintained in winter, so you can ride with confidence. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. And please feel welcome to come and visit Nishiokoppe Village! #Nishiokoppe Village #Hokkaido #Sapporo #Access #Public transport #Bus #Express bus #JR #Limited express

“Delicious, Fun Spring Marche” A tasty gourmet fair with a children’s festival Nishiokoppe Marche! This year it was held again over three days during Golden Week. On the first day, such strong winds blew that tents almost flew away Σ゚Д゚ This time the village’s Western-style restaurant, Harapeko-do, also took part! They sold Margherita pizza. At the children’s festival there were the usual rock–paper–scissors events, a kids’ lottery, yo-yo fishing, and candy fishing ✨ Some children were so tempted by the attractive sweets and toys that they tried again and again. Here are the other vendors! * Setoushi-kun pancakes and chiffon cake * Soba and udon topped with wild vegetable tempura * Ezo deer meatballs and deer simmered in red wine The tempura stuffed with plenty of wild vegetables and other fillings was delicious even eaten on its own!^^! During the market the Flower Park was open free of charge, and many people enjoyed viewing the spring blossoms. It makes us happy to see the Roadside Station bustling. Thank you to everyone who came!! #Nishiokoppe Village #Roadside Station #Kam #Nishiokoppe Marche #GW #Gourmet #Children’s Festival #Flower Park #Flowers #Spring

[Lively Forest Park] The forest park in Nishiokoppe Village reopened on April 29, at the start of Golden Week. Last year it was under renovation, and this was my first time seeing the playground equipment actually in use. I was surprised by how many people showed up on opening day! Many visitors came to make the most of the free-access play equipment. Some rode the go-karts again and again, and others kept batting at the batting cages for hours, while some enjoyed a peaceful picnic. The crowd grew even larger in the latter half of Golden Week when food trucks arrived, and the inflatable dome was continually full. Even the equipment that wasn’t free kept running. It was so pleasant to watch a park filled with the sounds of people enjoying themselves. Please come visit again! Look forward to the campground opening in early June. #Nishiokoppe Village #Forest Park #Golden Week #Opening Event #Renewal Open #Plenty of Play Equipment #Northernmost Batting Center #Sharp-turn Go-Karts #The cherry blossoms were beautifully in bloom
