The Sacred Tree Festival: Once every 20 years, the sacred tree destined for dedication at Ise Jingu is felled in the Omomasahajime Ceremony, followed by the celebratory Sacred Tree Festival. This grand festival, held once every 20 years, will take place in June 2025. The Omomasahajime Ceremony on June 3 is part of Ise Jingu’s rituals and is not open to the public, but the Sacred Tree Festival from June 4 to 6 is open to everyone. You can also enjoy dedication rituals and traditional performing arts. You may join the rare and important tree-transport procession, the Okihiki, which carries the sacred tree to Ise Jingu. Registration closes once capacity is reached. For inquiries, contact Agematsu Tourism Association at 0264-52-1133 or check the website. Exclusive original goods available for a limited time are on sale now. See the Kiso Tourism Federation website “Kiso Valley Trip” for purchase details. Here are five events now taking place or scheduled in Shobara City, Hiroshima Prefecture (in no particular order). Please join any events that catch your eye 😍 1. The 31st Ancient Tatara Ironmaking, recreating Japan’s traditional iron smelting technique, is happening! Since the opening of the national Biwako Hill Park in 1995, the region has continued the ancient tatara ironmaking tradition as a community effort. This year marks the 31st edition. We continue this practice to pass the tatara smelting technique, a symbol of the Chugoku Mountains’ culture, on to the next generation. Date: Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11, 2025 Place: Hiba-no-Sato Ancient Tatara Workshop Program: We will recreate the full process of tatara smelting using the traditional kerashio pressing method to extract keras, the raw material that becomes tamahagane steel used for fine blades such as Japanese swords. Instruction will be provided by certified preservation technician and tamahagane producer, Nitohho Tatara’s general supervisor Murashita Shoku and Mr. Kaoru Horio. Participants: About 100 people (including general participants and cooperating groups) Fee: Free to watch (park admission fee required separately). The 82nd Inukai Donko Fishing Tournament The Donko Fishing Tournament in Inukai Town, which began in 1929 (Showa 4), now marks its 82nd edition this year and has become widely known as the town of Donko. This year’s event includes attractions designed to delight the children, who are the stars of the day. Please join us for a Donko Fishing Tournament full of fun. Date and Time Sunday, May 11, 2025 Donko fishing registration starts / 8:30–10:30 Registration location / Tournament venue entrance Location Downstream of Inukai Ohashi Bridge (National Route 10 side) Kuhara, Inukai Town, Bungo-Ono City Entry Fee 500 yen per participant Bait included (first time only; additional bait 200 yen) Participation prize / child patch (for elementary school children and younger) * Fishing gear sets are available for rent (fee applies) * Payment of the entry fee grants access to the Treasure Hunt (for elementary school children and younger), weighing and judging for the Donko Fishing Tournament, and the fun prize lottery.
