Tomi City Tourist Association
Jul. 17, 2025
In the past, there were "round-table discussions" and "historical walking tours" in the Tomi City Yoshizu area, where Azusa kamiko (priestesses) called "Nonou" who were said to be the "Village priestesses of No.1 in Japan" and who traveled around the world gathered. Local residents' volunteers held the "Nishinomiya-ri Development Association," which was attended by 15 people from inside and outside the prefecture, including history buffs and tourism officials. "In the Spring, a group of several to several dozen priestesses, led by the Shinto ritual Maitao, set out on a tour from Nonou Alley, and they divined their worries, sufferings, and wishes in the village where they toured," says Hirofumi Shinohara, secretary of the association. He is the "descendant family of the Shinto ritual Maitao (owner of Nishinomiya Shrine)", and Ancient documents are handed down to the house, and researchers who visit from all over the country and people who admire Nonou are accepted and visited to guide the history of the area. Four years ago, I held a walking priestess tour in Pre, and this is the second time. In March of this year, he published "Nonou's Picture Book" in order to let Local children know about it. At a roundtable discussion held at the Community Center, Mr. Shinohara said, "I would like to broaden my horizons and experience the history and culture of Jozu with Nonou." He explained his involvement with Sengoku Warlords such as Takeda Shingen, and how the area was spun by people such as the Sanada clan, Yamabushi, and Nonou of Yuzu while playing an active role. He also spoke about the endemic nature of Yoshizu, saying, "There were many things related to women, such as being kind to women, and there were a variety of livelihoods." Tyler Lynch, the young husband of Tokura Kamiyamada Hot Spring "Ryokan Kamekiyo," who participated in the event, said, "It is very interesting from a European and Rice perspective. Ms. Shinohara said, "There is no historical record that the priestess had a Gari of espionage activities or that she was acting as a female ninja, but since she was in a position to travel around the country and see and hear various Information, how she used it is Squid world of imagination." Kazuo Hayakawa, secretary general of the Shinshu Toumi Tourism Association, said, "I hope people will learn about the culture of Yoshitsu Village. There is also a culture where Nishinomiya and Higashimachi compete with each other." The historical walking tour was led by Mr. Shinohara and guided by Local officials such as Hiroaki Igarashi and Mr. Hayakawa of Jotsuin. After visiting Nonou's grave, the ruins of the mansion, the alley of Nonou, and the Nishinomiya Shrine, Mr. Shinohara "cleansed his body by bathing in cold Water at this well (the ruins of the mansion)." At the Nishinomiya Shrine, "I used to watch my grandfather printing bills until I was in junior high school." At Kanai alley, he said, "You can see Mt. Misaki from here, Mr. Kanai was in charge of the Mt. Mijayama Festival, and there were priestesses and priestesses among the hospitality, and they offered the deer caught on Mt. Misaki to the gods." Visiting the site of the Jotsu-in temple opened by Mr. Yoshitsu under the guidance of Sumitomo Igarashi. At the gravesite of the Yoshitsu clan, we learned about Roux and the face of the falconer sect, and the falconry ritual of the Suwa faith. In addition to this, we also visited the Maiden River, the megalith of the princess, the Nishinomiya Kabuki Stage, and the Higashimachi Kabuki Stage. Mayumi Castro Kagura, a priestess and writer from Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, said, "I've been interested in Yoshitsu for the past two years and have been coming here frequently. Kaori Yamazaki, a participant from Nagano City, said, "I have walked since I participated in the Walking Priestess Tour four years ago, and this is a good opportunity to listen to the explanations, so I hope it will continue in the future." Yu Takizawa, who participated from Sugadaira Highlands in Ueda City, said, "I'm planning a walking priestess tour with my friends, and I want to dress up as a priestess and walk while thinking about it." On July 7th, the members who participated this time will take the lead in holding the "Walking Priestess Tour" of the Yoshitsu Historical Walk. Under the guidance of Mr. Takizawa, the Traditional Culture Study Group groups, and under the guidance of Mr. Tyler, the "Ninja Project groups" will tour Yuzu. < Historical Notes> ◇ Nonou's tour of countries: Emotional support for the common people As a mediator between gods and people, Nonou performed "mouth-to-mouth" activities such as ringing the azusa bow and conveying oracles. It supported the spirit of the common people from the Sengoku period to the Edo period. The warlord also borrowed Nonou's mouth to obtain a prophecy of victory from the gods, alleviating the fear of death and giving him confidence of victory. In the Edo period, the largest number of nonou lived in the Village of Akizu, and there were about 50 nonou houses. With the approval of the Edo shogunate's temple and shrine magistrates, the Saiai Shinto Shinto ritual Maitao and Nonou, who presided over Azusa Jinko, formed a caravan and were able to tour the countries freely. In the Meiji era, activities were banned by the religious policy of the new government, and many sought new ways of life, such as closing businesses or immigrating. ◇Minamoto of Nonou Historical soil of Akizu As for why priestesses gathered in the Village of Yoshitsu, according to Higashimomachi magazines and magazines, it is considered that the land of Yoshitsu has been a soil for accepting priestesses since ancient times, and place names and remnants related to women and Shinto ritual. Tradition reminiscent of the origins of Nonou and the historical climate of Yoshitsu are listed in chronological order. ▽ From the Kofun period to the Nara period, the central power advanced into the area, and the culture of the ancient center flourished in this area ▽ The changes in place names that remain in ancient times (Umino Township→ Miss Village→ Maiden Township → Umino Sho) are place names that indicate the local character that has a deep relationship with "Yubu" in ancient times, and the figure of Yube, the priestesses who participated in the requiem Shinto ritual of performing Kagura dances and playing divine spirits, comes to mind ▽ From the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Edo period, the Shino clan of the Yoshitsu clan made a name for themselves as the best falconers in the eastern part of the country, and there are many secret traditions among the falconers, and shamanism can be seen in them. ▽ The Yoshitsu clan is strongly associated with medieval Suwa, and the local characters "Mijakuyama", Iwai-do, and Kanai alley that remain in the former Akizu Village convey the faces of the Mijayama Shinto ritual (hunting Shinto ritual) that the Yoshitsu clan would have performed as a clan of the Suwa no kami clan. Mt. Misaki is a hunting ground, and Iwai-do is a remnant of a place (celebration hall) for divine festivals. Kanai alley is a place name that conveys the place of residence of the Kanai clan, who served as a deer priest who prepared dishes to be offered to the gods, and who served as a large city official who dedicated kagura at festivals and conveyed divine proclamations. ▽ During the Sengoku period, Chiyo Mochizuki, who was appointed as the head priestess (priestess) of both Kai and Shinano by a shuin stamp letter from Takeda Shingen, relied on her connections and settled in Yuzu Village. ▽ In the Edo period, Yoshitsu was the main flag, so it was easy for Nonou and others to work and the backing of the shogunate. Gion Shrine Summer Festival July 15 was the Gion Shrine’s summer festival⛩ We covered the Morimaki ritual held before the ceremony📷 They shaped the makaya grass gathered that morning into the form of Yamata no Orochi💪 Makaya is stiff, and twisting large amounts at once is a real challenge😅 Still, the Morimaki Ritual Preservation Society finished it with impressive skill✨ The amazake prepared overnight also turned out exceptionally tasty this year😆 There were many more visitors this year, which made us happy😁 The local community cherishes their “Gion-san” It will surely continue together with the community going forward🥰

Sunset Village Marche & KIDS Festa On Sunday, July 13th, Sunset Village Marche & KIDS Festa took place in the wine hall at Gokasecho Winery. Rain fell while we were setting up, and the weather caused some worry, but though there were occasional heavy showers, we also saw sunny spells. With many stalls and stage events, the place buzzed with families and visitors. The water play area was a huge hit with the children. Kids went wild with the full-scale water guns and pools. Huge numbers of soap bubbles floated out from the bubble booth, too. Seeing so many children smile made this a day that brought smiles to all of us.

Hiroshima Miyoshi DMO
Jun. 19, 2025
Hello to everyone watching Cool Japan Video — nice to meet you! We are the Miyoshi City Tourism Promotion Organization. Miyoshi City, located in northern Hiroshima Prefecture, sits at the meeting point of the San'in and Sanyo regions. This nature-rich, montane area is a town where history and culture thrive. Surrounded by the Chūgoku Mountains and blessed with abundant forests, clear streams, and the Gonokawa River, Miyoshi has long prospered as a hub of travel and exchange. As a tourist destination, it offers a variety of attractions: ancient myths and yokai folklore, traditional performing arts, local specialties such as wine and cheese, and spectacular scenic spots. In Miyoshi, where nature and history blend with contemporary art, local ingredients, and everyday life, you can enjoy a relaxed trip away from the bustle of the city. ◆Access to Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi City in Hiroshima Prefecture lies about 90 km north of Hiroshima city, roughly a 1 hour 30 minute drive, making it conveniently accessible. You can reach the area via the Chugoku Expressway at Miyoshi Interchange or Miyoshi-Higashi Interchange, and it is also about a one-hour drive from Hiroshima Airport. By train, JR Geibi Line’s Miyoshi Station serves as the gateway. Direct trains run from Hiroshima Station, and the scenic views from the window make the journey popular. Express buses also run frequently from Hiroshima Station and Hiroshima Bus Center, offering a convenient option. Within Miyoshi City, rental cars and local buses are well organized, making it easy to get around to tourist sites. ◆About Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi City lies in northern Hiroshima Prefecture, bordering Shimane Prefecture. The city occupies a basin surrounded by mountains, with the Gonokawa River, Basen River, and Saijo River flowing through it. As of April 2025, the population is about 47,000. The modern city was formed in 2004 through a merger of eight surrounding municipalities, and it ranks among the largest municipalities by area in Hiroshima Prefecture. Agriculture and forestry remain important industries, and in recent years the city has promoted tourism that leverages local resources, with wineries and direct-sales markets and other community-focused facilities flourishing. ◆History of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi’s history is ancient, appearing in mythic eras. The area is associated with Izumo mythology and preserves many kagura performances and legends. During the Sengoku period, Hieioyama Castle, once the stronghold of the Miyoshi Clan (later moved to Bikuma Castle), was built and the town developed as a castle town. In the Edo period, Miyoshi prospered as a post town on the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine Road and became an important river-transport relay on the Gonokawa River, thriving as a center of commerce and transportation. ◆Popular sightseeing spots in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture ・Miyoshi Mononoke Museum (Yumoto Koichi Memorial Japan Yokai Museum) This nationally renowned yokai museum in Miyoshi houses the collection of leading yokai scholar Yumoto Goichi. Exhibits cover yokai culture from the Edo period to the present, and AR and video displays make the museum enjoyable for both children and adults. Special exhibitions and workshops are held regularly. ・Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery This complex offers wine production, sales, and tastings using locally grown grapes. It features one of western Japan’s largest wine cellars and a wine bar counter. In addition to factory tours, the facility includes a restaurant, cafe, and a direct-sales shop selling local products, making it popular with families and couples. Each year during Golden Week the Miyoshi Wine Festival draws many visitors from inside and outside the prefecture. Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery’s wines earn awards at various international competitions each year. ・Okuda Genso Sayume Art Museum This museum exhibits works by Japanese painter Genso Okuda and doll artist Sayume Okuda, a married couple who were the first spouses to receive the Cultural Merit Award in Japan. The building itself is an artwork, making it a must-see for art lovers. ・Josei Falls Located in Sakugi-cho, Miyoshi City, Josei Falls is a beautiful three-tier waterfall with a drop of 126 meters. Surrounded by seasonal nature, you can enjoy fresh green in spring, cool relief in summer, autumn colors, and frozen cascades in winter—an all-season scenic spot. Selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, it offers a cleansing, restorative experience just by visiting. ・Mt. Takatani (Sea of Clouds Observatory) This 490-meter lookout offers a panoramic view of Miyoshi’s iconic “sea of clouds.” From October to December on clear early mornings with sharp temperature differences, a mystical sea of clouds appears, transporting you to another world. The sunrise and mist together create scenes beloved by photographers. ◆Roadside stations in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi hosts the popular Roadside Station Yumeland Funo, a favorite rest spot for visitors. Yumeland Funo sells fresh local vegetables, fruits, and processed goods, and its dining facilities serve local dishes that highlight seasonal ingredients. ◆Hot springs in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi is home to Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi. As a large facility offering lodging, dining, and shopping, it attracts many visitors. ◆Traditional culture and crafts of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture ・Kagura Kagura represents a symbol of Miyoshi’s traditional culture. This performing art, passed down since ancient times, features different programs, costumes, and staging across communities and plays an indispensable role in local festivals and events. ・Cormorant Fishing in Miyoshi Cormorant fishing in Miyoshi has a history and tradition spanning more than 450 years and is a rare cultural practice available at only about 11 locations nationwide. Designated as a Hiroshima Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property and honored with the Hiroshima Prefectural Education Encouragement Award, Miyoshi’s cormorant fishing is notable for its unique method in which cormorant boats and pleasure boats run side by side. On summer nights, boarding a pleasure boat to watch cormorant fishing up close creates an otherworldly experience as if traveling back in time. The torches flickering on the river at dusk add a magical atmosphere, leaving you with unforgettable memories. ◆Local specialties and gourmet foods of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi’s food culture draws on the region’s abundant natural resources. A flagship product is Miyoshi wine. High-quality wines produced at local wineries come in red, white, and rosé varieties and have earned high praise at domestic and international competitions. Another specialty is ayu dishes made from the Gonokawa River’s sweetfish. You can enjoy freshly caught ayu grilled with salt, simmered in sweet soy, or as ayu-flavored soy sauce. Many processed products using local ingredients make excellent souvenirs. ◆Events and festivals in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi hosts colorful local events and festivals throughout the year. ・Miyoshi Kinsai Festival This major summer event, organized by Miyoshi residents, fills the streets with parades, taiko drumming, food stalls, and bon-odori dancing. ・Miyoshi Wine Festival Held on the lawn area of Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery, the Wine Festival features tastings, live music, and local gourmet stalls, making it a must for wine lovers. ◆Tourist information for Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture With a unique museum dedicated to yokai culture, gourmet offerings born from nature’s bounty, seasonal scenic spots, and community-rooted traditional events, Miyoshi still holds many little-known gems where repeated visits reveal new discoveries. It is a traditional event of the sea in Okinawa that has continued since the Ryukyu Kingdom period about 600 years ago, and is Held in during Golden Week on May 3~5 to pray for safe navigation and good fishing. It features a dragon boat with a dragon motif, and it's amazing to see 32 rowers competing with each other! I went to see it again this year.
