This ceremony oversees the act of purification, the very essence of the Sumiyoshi Festival and the mikoshi procession. When you think of "Minamoto Heigosen", names such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Taira Kiyomori immediately come to mind, but do you know who "Minamoto Noriyori" is? One of Minamoto no Yoritomo's younger brothers, who also appeared in the NHK taiga drama "13 people of Kamakura-den" broadcast in 2022 (Reiwa 4), is "Minamoto no Yoriyori". Since he was born and raised in Kama Mikuriya in Toei Province (present-day Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture), he was also called Kabakaja and Kabado. Tucked away at the foot of Mt. Gyodo in Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture, the tomb of Minamoto Noriyori is built at Kamakura Shrine. Noriyori played a great role for the Minamoto clan, such as defeating Kiso Yoshinaka with Minamoto Yoshitsune and leaving achievements in the pursuit of the Heike at the Battle of Dannoura, but he was suspected of rebellion due to a single careless remark and was imprisoned in the ShuZen Temple in Izu.
