Light Census Experience On a weeknight, 17 elementary school students gathered at the community center. It wasn’t a secret meeting for the kids but a gathering to take part in the first session of this year’s Wildlife Classroom *'▽' There was a reason we met at night. This mission was to experience a “light census”! The light census, one method for counting animal numbers, was conducted together with the Hunting Area Management Association that carries it out in practice, and we searched for and observed wild animals, including deer. After a short lecture about deer characteristics and other topics, we boarded the bus and set off into the forest 🚌 Some participants looked a little frightened as the forest grew darker, but whenever they spotted an animal they shouted loudly, “There it is!” to report the sighting. Everyone diligently recorded the numbers in their own booklets. Many first graders joined, and some could not yet write tally marks correctly, but they noted their sightings in ways that worked for them. Unexpectedly, we even saw that other animal, but everyone returned safely together ○ Back indoors, we compared the numbers we had found, and the first Wildlife Classroom session came to an end. Although it was within the village, traveling by bus through the night forest was an exciting time! The second session is planned as a camp during the summer break. Look forward to the next report! #Wildlife Classroom #Regional Revitalization Cooperation Corps #Hunting Area Management Association #Nishiokoppe Village #Elementary School Students #Wild Animals #Deer #Population Count #Light Census #We even encountered a bear

We created a leaflet with directions to Masudayama so visitors can enjoy the views of trains passing along the Sekisho Line, a frequent subject of inquiries to the tourism association. Parts of the route are unpaved and some sections are rough, so please drive with great care. Also, since this is a natural mountain area, be aware of possible brown bear sightings. Detailed precautions are listed on the leaflet titled "Important Notice for Those Heading to Masudayama," so please read it. This information pop-up is also posted under "News" on the Shintoku Town Tourism Association website.

We joined the townwide ‘National Route 38 Environmental Beautification Activity’ organized and carried out by local residents, and planted seedlings of 6,000 red salvias and dusty miller along 43 blocks of Route 38 in Shintoku, where the sky was still cloudy after the rain. This road is known as the Hokkaido Garden Path and is used by visitors traveling between Obihiro and Furano or Asahikawa. We hope it will offer a warm welcome to drivers on summer sightseeing trips and lift their spirits.

Searching for spring in Miyanomori! Just when we thought temperatures would warm toward summer it turned sharply colder on Saturday, May 25. In the past, I explored around Nishiokoppe Shrine with Mr. Takada, who once served as the regional revitalization team’s wood-learning (mokuiiku) coordinator and as a forestry curator for the Board of Education. Since bear sighting reports last spring, Miyanomori has been a place we haven’t had many chances to enter. The snow has completely disappeared, and grasses are growing vigorously as we walked, spotting the white flowers that bloom in spring. With the pocket field guide Mr. Takada gave me in hand, I looked down at the ground and up into the trees to observe them. If you listen closely, you can hear bird calls between the rustling of leaves. People around the village often teach me the names of flowers and wild plants, but I struggle to remember them. Little by little, I hope to learn by comparing photos with real specimens, sometimes tasting or smelling them and using my five senses. I enjoy walking alone, but it’s also fun to stroll with a few people and listen to their voices. Thank you to everyone who joined us! #Nishiokoppe Village #Miyanomori #nature #spring #wood learning #community education #walk #nature observation #If you find new spruce buds, be sure to touch them

Yesterday, on Sunday, I started from Karikachi Pass and hiked up to Sahoro-dake. Along the way I passed the summit of Sakurayama and reached the Sahoro-dake summit in about two and a half hours. Blessed with fine weather, I enjoyed views of the Tokachi Plain below and, in the distance, Mt. Tomuraushi—one of the Daisetsuzan range—and the Hidaka Mountains, which are scheduled to be designated a national park in July. On the trail I also delighted in the white flowers of Chishima-zakura beginning to show as they turn into leaf cherry, savoring all the unique pleasures of mountain hiking. #Hokkaido #Tokachi #Shintoku #Shintoku Tourism Association #Karikachi Pass #Sahoro-dake #Sakurayama #Tokachi Plain #Daisetsuzan range #Mt. [Giant Setoushi-kun Appears!?] Roadside Station Kam sits along National Route 239. At its entrance a giant Setoushi-kun appears for a limited time! We were able to borrow hay rolls wrapped in white plastic from local dairy farmers in the village, so we decided to go all out and paint Setoushi-kun. When only orange and green were used, passersby puzzled over whether it was a pumpkin or a mandarin… (laughs) Once the eyes were added, it instantly looked like Setoushi-kun! Please stop by and take a look when you pass through! We’ve also included before-and-after photos *^-^* #Nishiokoppe Village #Hokkaido #local mascot #Setoushi-kun #oversized #hay roll #limited time #Roadside Station #Kam

Shibazakura Phlox Marche On May 19, I visited the Phlox Marche held at Shibazakura Takinoue Park. It was the perfect moment of full bloom, and a pink carpet stretched as far as the eye could see.🌸 That day featured a “Local Mascots Gathering,” with booths set up side by side from Omu, Engaru, and Monbetsu. Several large tour buses arrived, and the line for soft serve never seemed to shrink. I was amazed by how many visitors came! At the Nishiokoppe booth, we sold Ezo deer leather crafts, pet food, and drinking yogurt from Milk Design Co. Many people enjoyed the park with their dogs, which helped sales of deer jerky and Achilles sticks for dogs sell well. When the local mascots appeared, many children were delighted. It was adorable to see all the different characters lined up *^-^* Items sold at the Phlox Marche are also available at Hotel Morimu and Roadside Station Kam. We look forward to seeing you again at another lively event! #Takinoue Town #Shibazakura Park #Shibazakura Festival #Phlox Marche #Marche #Booth Exhibits #Local Mascots Gathering #Setoushi-kun #Nishiokoppe Village #Game Management Association #Ezo deer #Milk Design

Advance Notice: Climbing Hydrangeas Blooming It’s still a bit early, but from mid-June to early July hundreds of estimated climbing hydrangea plants that twine around the larch growth forest in Karikachi Kogen Park will begin to bloom. Their cream-colored, 5 mm flowers form clusters that make the larch trees look as if they are wearing dresses. This year has been warmer than usual, so blooming may occur earlier; we will announce it once the flowers open. The usual peak viewing season is from early to mid-July.
