Kodai Fire Festival The Kodai Fire Festival takes place every year on August 14 in Ogata Town, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu. This traditional event has been passed down since the Edo period. Its origins are unclear, but it is said to have begun as a Bon memorial service, a ritual to drive away pests and pray for a bountiful rice harvest, or as a memorial for victims of an uprising that occurred during the Edo period. On the day of the festival, local residents prepare small torches called kodai in the rice fields across the Ogata Plain, starting around Harajiri Falls. At night, when about 10,000 kodai are lit all at once, their lights rise up from around Harajiri Falls across the Ogata Plain. The scene is exceptionally dreamlike. Some districts in Ogata Town create torii gates, stone bridges, and other features using kodai, creating a stunning competition of beauty.

Rousokuda-se August 7 is Tanabata Day in Hokkaido. In Nishiokoppe Village, children parade through the village, and it’s a day when they receive sweets instead of candles! “Bring out the candles—bring them out!” When they arrive at houses that have prepared treats, the children sing in unison. Since this event happens only once a year, they started out singing a little shyly. Watching parents clap along and sing with them help raise the energy. As more sweets are collected, their singing grows livelier. At the final stop, the elementary school, they sing at the top of their lungs and get fireworks! Even after walking for more than an hour, the children’s energy is remarkable. They go wild over sparklers and aerial fireworks. While parading through town, junior high students carry bags of candy, and older elementary children walk hand in hand with those from the nursery. It was a soothing night to witness those scenes. #Nishiokoppe Village #Rousokuda-se #elementary school #PTA #What they want are sweets #Tanabata #August 7 #Hokkaido

Wooden Racing Bike Every summer, led by woodworking instructors, the Woody Summer School runs as a two-night, three-day program. This year’s project was a racing bike. The sample displayed at Kimu looked so finely made it seemed ready to race off at any moment. Participants cut and shaved parts and progressed their work using the machines in the woodshop. When I dropped in on the second day’s work, everyone concentrated on the instructions. While they carefully focused on their projects, I snapped photos with my camera. The three days were packed with Nishiokoppe-specific activities, like eating Setoushi-kun-yaki and sipping blueberry juice during tea time, strolling through Kamu no Hana, and making stick bread over a bonfire. Each finished piece showed the participant’s own original decorations, giving a glimpse of their personal touches. After the work, the tables were scattered with handwritten notes and the tools used for painting. Although the period was short, it was good to see that everyone completed their projects. Thank you for participating! #Nishiokoppe Village #Forest Museum #Kimu #Woodworking #Woody Summer School #Woody #Racing Bike #Wooden Toys #Handmade #mokuiiku (wood learning) #Camp

Cheers with Beer on a Hot Night A beer garden returned after five years. It might have been a night many villagers had long awaited. With no rain to spoil the evening, cold beer went down well on the hot night. The drink line never stopped, and snacks sold briskly. Outside, people of all ages—from children to the elderly—gathered, chatting as they enjoyed their favorite drinks and the foods they wanted. It was a refreshing night that blew away our tiredness. #Nishiokoppe Village #Summer #Beer Garden #Chamber of Commerce #Youth Division #Night #Popular Fried Dumplings #Many Cotton Candy Repeat Customers

I Went to See the Ice Tunnel The last Sunday in July was the annual day the ice tunnel opened to the public! After a long heatwave and heavy rain a few days earlier, the organizers went to check on the tunnel just before the event to make sure it still existed. Compared with other years, some of the ice nearer the entrance had melted, so visitors picked their way—sometimes through the riverbed—toward the ice deeper inside. Even as we climbed over uneven ground and logs, cool air flowed up from the river, making it refreshingly chilly! I spent the day enjoying the coolness with a friend who had come along for the occasion, then we headed home. We rode a shuttle bus from town, so the trip there and back felt easy and relaxing—enough time for a nap. (*'▽') I’m already looking forward to next year’s opening day! #Nishiokoppe Village #Event #Summer #Ice Tunnel #Chamber of Commerce Youth Division #Cool Retreat #Refreshing
