Shinto Shrine Festival September 11th marked the shrine festival in the Nishiokoppe district. Elementary and junior high schools ended classes early, and by 10:30 everyone had gathered at the starting point for the mikoshi procession. Adults and children alike wore happi coats and moved through each neighborhood association. Preschoolers dressed in ochigo (child attendant) costumes followed the adults and the older students, walking on bravely. It took about two and a half hours to complete the whole route. Because people usually travel around the village by car, it had been a long time since anyone walked this much. The lion-dance team reportedly visited each house with someone at home, which took more than twice as long. Thank you to everyone for your hard work. Despite all that walking, the elementary school children were full of energy for the sumo tournament! They worked hard to earn pocket money for enjoying the evening variety show. Although it was a serious competition, the sumo tournament was full of smiles. The whole village was awash in festival spirit for the day. I will post separately about the evening variety show! #Nishiokoppe Village #Shrine Festival #Mikoshi Procession #Parade #We paraded through the streets #Tengu #Sumo Tournament

On Sunday, September 8th, the children’s festival at Hotaka Shrine featured child-drawn boats pulled from three town districts. Each boat was paraded through its district, and before noon they gathered at Hotaka Shrine to be offered in dedication. Children from the districts acted as pullers as the boat-shaped floats, called ofune, moved through the streets of Azumino. On September 26th and 27th, the Hotaka Shrine Ofune Festival takes place. On the 27th, a hands-on tour organized by the tourism association lets participants, together with local residents, pull a large adult boat weighing over five tons. For details, please check the official tourism association website.

"Venison Festival!!!" Following last year, the Venison Festival was held again! Deer can eat crops and flowers, and collisions with cars can cause accidents, making them a troublesome presence. However, in Nishiokoppe Village, where deer are relatively numerous, some people are working not to treat deer simply as pests but to use them as a resource. This event was part of those efforts, a day to deliciously enjoy deer caught in Nishiokoppe right there in Nishiokoppe. Some participants were village residents, but the vast majority came from outside the village. Whole roasts, stews, hamburgers and sausages. Everything was superb, and many attendees came back for seconds and thirds. Thank you to everyone who came! #Nishiokoppe Village #deer #Venison Festival #meat #NPO Nishiokoppe Village Hunting District Management Association #Thank you for the meal"

Dance on the Night of Lanterns In Nishiokoppe Village every year, the Bon dance in the Kamiokoppe area takes place on the 14th and the Bon dance in the Nishiokoppe area takes place on the 15th. Some campers and riders come to Nishiokoppe just for these two nights! That makes us very happy. To the beat of the drums, we dance two songs: the children’s Bon dance and the Hokkai Bon Uta. If you dance both fully, it easily runs over an hour. Dancing for such a long time made me realize how much energy it really takes. And the best part of Bon dance is the costumes, right? Who will come in what costume is a mystery until the day itself. Seeing the adults go all out in costume and dance in a circle somehow lifts your spirits. A Bon dance festival for those who dance and those who don’t to enjoy. Thank you to everyone for your hard work! #Nishiokoppe Village #Kamiokoppe #Nishiokoppe #Costumes #Bon Dance Festival #Two Nights in a Row #Food Stalls #Chilly Bon nights #A sense that summer’s end is approaching
