The other day, I set out to discover a new walking course in the former Toyoda Village area, so I walked from JR Iiyama Line kaesa station to lotus station. I started at 6 a.m. while the air was still a bit cool, before it got hot. Listening to stories from staff born or living locally, I walked along the Chikuma River, through villages, and along paths surrounded by rice fields. I crossed the newly built Kanakura Kabeta Bridge and also admired it from below. Since I usually only drive over that bridge, the views felt fresh. Along the way I passed IiyamaLine trains about three times and was reminded how well walking, railways, and scenery go together. The walk took about three hours including breaks. There are still things to improve, but this looks like a refreshingly pleasant course!

July 7th–July 9th Iwanai Shrine Annual Festival Now Underway The Iwanai Shrine Annual Festival, fondly known locally as the Iwanai Festival, is a beloved community celebration. The schedule runs with the Eve Festival on the 7th, the Main Festival on the 8th, and the Return Festival on the 9th; portable shrine processions take place on the 8th and 9th. For the rites honoring Sarutahiko no Mikoto and Uzume no Mikoto, attendants are chosen from the cohort facing their critical 42nd year. On the 9th, the national highway is closed to traffic so two portable shrines can charge up “Jinja-zaka” in one breathtaking dash. The town-designated intangible folk cultural asset “Akasaka Yatsu” is another festival highlight. For detailed schedules and information, please check the Iwanai Shrine website. Don’t miss this once-a-year opportunity!

Special Exhibition at Hishikawa Moronobu Memorial Hall: “Japanese Yokai in Ukiyo-e” A special exhibition titled “Japanese Yokai in Ukiyo-e — Turn Around and It’s a Mononoke Summer” is now on view at the Hishikawa Moronobu Memorial Hall. The show introduces 100 ukiyo-e prints depicting yokai that are frightening yet somehow humorous. Since ancient times, Japanese people have perceived unseen and mysterious things as mononoke. “When the Edo period arrived, Edo residents—driven by a morbid curiosity—turned mononoke into yokai characters and enjoyed the thrill of fear,” explains curator Hiroki Sasao. One highlight of the exhibition is work by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, a specialist in yokai imagery. Active from the late Tokugawa period into the Meiji era, Yoshitoshi is known for a dramatic, almost comic-book style that captivates viewers with dynamic brushwork. The exhibition also shows actor prints of kabuki performers, offering insight into kabuki plays that feature yokai. “In fact, kabuki is the art form that popularized yokai stories in summer,” says curator Sasao. “It started when a famous kabuki actor took a summer break and a yokai-themed play staged in his absence happened to become a hit.” Curator gallery talks will be held at 1:30 p.m. on July 21 and August 11. The exhibition runs through September 23. Opening hours 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last admission at 4:30 p.m.) Closed days Mondays (the following Tuesday when Monday is a public holiday) During the New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3) Admission fees Adults and university students: 500 yen (400 yen) Elementary, junior high, and high school students: 400 yen (300 yen) *Prices in parentheses apply to groups of 20 or more. Access By train: 15-minute walk from Hota Station or Awa-Katsuyama Station on the JR Uchibo Line By car: 5 minutes from Kyonan-Hota IC on the Futtsu–Tateyama Toll Road, along Route 127, inside Roadside Station Kyonan

The Summer Solstice is Cub, The Summer Solstice Cub The summer solstice has passed. Before we knew it, the year has already reached its halfway point… At Guesthouse GA.KOPPER an event welcoming Cub riders took place on the day before and on the day of the solstice! This Solstice Cub event was held for the third time this year. Around 20 participants gathered from inside and outside Hokkaido, including the owner’s Cub friends. Contests to decide who could ride a Cub the latest into the night and a game where riders fitted helmets with buckets of water to see how far they could go without spilling much were met with great excitement. After lively Cub conversations and a delicious dinner, we had not a campfire but a Cub fire! Surrounded by rows of participants’ Cubs riders gathered around the fire, drinks in hand, and chatted animatedly. Then, on the morning of the solstice, with sunrise at 3:44 a.m., the Cubs all took off together toward Mt. Wenshiri. No encounters with bears or rain occurred, and we were relieved that everyone returned safely. We thank the teru teru bozu. Whether it’s one year or several years from now, we look forward to meeting again on some future solstice! #GA.KOPPER #Summer Solstice #Cub #Solstice Cub #hokkaider #Kopper-san #chopper #Cub Fire #Geshibashiri
