The enormous central figure is Fudo Myoo (Acala). Fudo Myoo is typically depicted with an angry expression, but years of exposure to wind and rain have softened this bas-relief into a rounder, gentler face. Though large, the Fudo Myoo here feels very approachable. Fukoji is also called “Hydrangea Temple” because so many hydrangeas are planted there. During the rainy season, you can see many hydrangea blooms alongside the bas-relief Buddha. The 38th Meisui Hakusangawa Firefly Festival On June 7, 2025, the "Meisui Hakusangawa Firefly Festival" took place at Inazumi Underwater Cave Square. At the festival, visitors enjoyed the powerful drumming of Toyuu Taiko and the stirring dances of Okuhata Kagura. The Hakusangawa Firefly Festival is a warm, community-led event that continues out of locals' desire to celebrate and enliven the area. The day ended with a lively fan dance performed by local residents, drawing a large crowd. After the festival, many attendees stayed to enjoy firefly watching. Overflow at Chinda Falls Resumes Chinda Falls, located in Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture on Kyushu. Waterfall flow had been stopped for construction since October 2024, but construction is complete and overflow resumed on May 21, 2025. Further construction will require another temporary stoppage of the waterfall. We will share details as they become available. 【Uedahara Yutate Kagura (kamitawara yutate kagura)】 The "Uedahara Yutate Kagura" took place on December 8, 2024, at Mitarai Shrine in Uedahara, Mie-machi, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu. This ritual, offered every three years to pray for good health and a bountiful harvest, drew many spectators on the day. The Uedahara Yutate Kagura begins with the fire deity tending two large cauldrons of boiling water while the waters are inspected. Afterward, dancers wildly leap over the charcoal embers, scattering sparks as they perform. Next, two performers dressed in eboshi caps and hakama stir the hot water and scoop it by hand to collect the yudama (hot-water spirit) to offer before the shrine. Then two performers in white robes drench themselves with sasa bamboo leaves, dance barefoot over the charcoal, enter the cauldron area to recite norito (Shinto prayers), and conclude with a final dedicatory dance. This ritual, offered once every three years to pray for good health and a bountiful harvest, drew many spectators on the day. The ceremony begins with the aragami (rough deity) performing a water purification of two large cauldrons whose fires have been kept burning, then wildly dancing over the charcoal fire while scattering sparks. Next, two performers in eboshi caps and hakama stir the water, scoop it by hand, and collect the yudama (water spirit) to offer before the deity. Then two white-robed performers drench themselves with water using kumazasa bamboo leaves, dance barefoot over the charcoal fire, enter the cauldron area to recite norito prayers, and conclude with a final dedication dance. The powerful, otherworldly spectacle drew loud applause from the audience.
