Autumn is drawing to a close, but there’s an exciting feeling that something new is about to begin. For some it may be just another ordinary day, but for others it becomes a beautiful scene—the start of a day. The beginning of encounters, the beginning of a journey.

In December, Uenokouen still holds the last traces of autumn. On the way back from a visit to Tokyo University of the Arts and viewing an exhibition, I was delighted to see the autumn leaves and took these photos. I hope I pass and can come back here to see the autumn foliage again next year.

This was also taken in the garden of Nezu Museum in Tokyo Metropolis. I was simply capturing an ordinary scene at my feet, but when I look closely I find each natural color beautiful. The colors increase in autumn, which makes me feel that even more.

Honzawa Onsen in Yatsugatake is Japan’s highest open-air bath. Autumn’s chill and mist make the mountain silence stand out. Rugged rock faces and trees turning golden, and an old sign that has watched over many climbers, create the scene. Walking, barely dressed and shivering to reach the bath, I felt the warmth of human kindness.

This photo was taken while walking by Ikebukuro Station on a rainy day in December. When I saw fallen autumn leaves on a puddle-covered concrete surface after the rain, I felt that even in this city you can sense autumn, and at the same time I realized that autumn was already coming to an end, so I took the picture.

This is a photo taken at Osaka Castle. The moon looked beautiful in the night sky, and below it a single maple tree and three streetlights formed a very balanced and beautiful scene, so I took the picture. There are pleasantly warm areas in the image, and I think it turned out to be a lovely photograph.

This photo was taken while exploring Expo Commemoration Park. I noticed a colorful fallen leaf that had naturally landed on a wooden table and thought it looked very beautiful, so I took a picture. The plain brown table seemed brightened by the multicolored leaves, truly like a natural palette.

This is a shot taken on Flower Hill (Hana-no-oka) in Expo Commemorative Park in Osaka. Surrounding the maple tree in the background, a fluffy plant called Muhlenbergia formed a ring, and I photographed it because it looked very magical in the evening light when I visited. It was truly beautiful.

This is a photo I took when I visited Sansenin in Kyoto. I thought the contrast between the dark areas and the bright autumn leaves was beautiful, so I photographed it. It was my first visit, and there were few people around, so I could enjoy the place at a relaxed pace.

Meigetsuin Temple, famous for its hydrangeas This temple in the historic city of Kamakura also offers spectacular autumn foliage. Especially from the Satori Window, the view of the autumn leaves captures a timeless sense of old Japan.

Korankei’s autumn leaves, said to be the best in the Tokai region. The view from the sanmon gate of Kojakuji Temple. I love this view and often linger, but when the light comes in it fills with many people. I waited until the crowd thinned to take these photos.

I photographed this at a light-up event held at Mamada Hachimangu Shrine in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture. The display of wagasa (Japanese paper umbrellas) was usually only shown on sunny weekends and was hard to see, but this time I visited for the first time. The autumn leaves were at their peak, the lighting was just right, and the wagasa stood out beautifully. It was a scene that truly evoked Japan.
