On Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5, the Yuzen Shrine Autumn Grand Festival will be held. This festival gives thanks for the hot springs, prays that the emerging spring veins will never cease, and wishes for the continued prosperity of Atami Onsen. After the COVID-19 pandemic the festival has been essentially limited to Shinto rites, and this year, as in the previous year, a portable shrine procession from the shrine is scheduled on the second day (October 5). Gion Shrine Summer Festival July 15 was the Gion Shrine’s summer festival⛩ We covered the Morimaki ritual held before the ceremony📷 They shaped the makaya grass gathered that morning into the form of Yamata no Orochi💪 Makaya is stiff, and twisting large amounts at once is a real challenge😅 Still, the Morimaki Ritual Preservation Society finished it with impressive skill✨ The amazake prepared overnight also turned out exceptionally tasty this year😆 There were many more visitors this year, which made us happy😁 The local community cherishes their “Gion-san” It will surely continue together with the community going forward🥰

Nagawacho Furumachi Toyouke Taijingū Annual Festival “Otaya Festival” At the festival, each district presents a “dashi” that depicts a scene from folktales, legends, or historical stories. Themes change each year, and handcrafted figures and sets are built to near life-size for that year’s display. Though called “dashi,” these are not the pullable or carriable floats people often imagine; instead, they are stationary decorative stages called okiyama placed on five stages around the shrine. They blend with the surrounding scenery and draw you into the story they represent. This year (2025) features five displays: “Bunbuku Chagama Tightrope,” “Dōjōji The Maiden Who Became a Serpent,” “The Nine-Tailed Fox (Tamamo-no-Mae) Legend,” “Chūshingura Vendetta,” and “Kōmon and His Party Traveling Through Shinano.” The festival is held every year on January 14 and 15, when the shrine conducts the Senrei Ceremony, a dedication of the Urayasu no Mai dance, and a performance of Yanagato and Fudō Taiko drums. Food stalls line the area around the shrine, and fireworks are set off at night.
