Former Hinata Family Atami Villa (Former Hinata Villa) Rihei Hinata, who prospered in Asian trade, completed this detached villa in 1936 (Showa 11) as an annex to his main residence. The two-story wooden main building was designed by Jin Watanabe, known for projects such as Wako in Ginza, Tokyo, the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno, and the Aichi Prefectural Office. The basement’s interior was designed by the world-renowned German architect Bruno Taut, making this the only surviving architectural work he left in Japan. The villa comprises three main rooms: a social room richly furnished with bamboo and paulownia wood, a Western-style room with an interior staircase as part of the room, and a Japanese-style tatami room. The design consciously reflects Japanese aesthetic traditions such as the Katsura Imperial Villa and Ise Grand Shrine. After the death of the Hinata family head, the villa was carefully used as a corporate retreat. Faced with the threat of demolition in 2004 (Heisei 16), Atami City acquired the property thanks to a donation from a philanthropist living in Tokyo. In 2006 (Heisei 18), it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. More than 80 years after its completion, deterioration and the urgent need to improve seismic performance made repairs critical. From fiscal 2018 (Heisei 30) to fiscal 2021 (Reiwa 3), large-scale conservation and repair work was carried out. In August 2022, the villa reopened to the public after preserving and reproducing its original condition as much as possible. ※Visits require advance reservation only (online reservations only). For details and reservations, please check the Atami City official website. Address/8-37 Kasuga-cho, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture 413-0005 Phone/0557-86-6232 (Atami City Lifelong Learning Division, Cultural Exchange Office: weekdays only) Access/About a 10-minute walk from atami station Opening days/Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 9:00–17:00, shift schedule ※online reservation required Admission/Adults 1,000 yen; junior and senior high school students 700 yen Parking/None

Former Kiya Takeshi Family Residence / Okinawa World Ryukyu Kingdom Castle Town Okinawa World is located in Nanjo City in the southern part of Okinawa Prefecture. It is a registered tangible cultural property located in the castle town of the Ryukyu Kingdom, where red-tiled kominka houses that recreate the townscape of the Ryukyu dynasty are lined up. It is a private house built in the late Meiji era, and it is a building that miraculously survived the ravages of war in the most intense place during the war. It was moved here from its original location. It is now used as a hands-on workshop. There were quite a few people who experienced it ^^ It is a valuable building that I would like to preserve in the future.

Former Kiya Takeshi Family Residence / Okinawa World Ryukyu Kingdom Castle Town Okinawa World is located in Nanjo City in the southern part of Okinawa Prefecture. I went to the castle town of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which reproduces the townscape of the Ryukyu Dynasty era lined with red tile kominka, which is a registered tangible cultural property. The building in the photo is a private house that miraculously survived the ravages of war and was the site of the most intense ground battle of the Pacific War. On the pillars on the side of the corridor, the scars of shells received during the war were still vivid. The building was moved here from its original location. Since it was relocated, it has been used as a hands-on workshop. A very valuable building that tells the history of the Battle of Okinawa, I want to preserve it for a long time.

Kiunkaku Kiunkaku began as a villa built in 1919 (Taisho 8) and was praised as one of Atami’s "three great villas." Reborn as a ryokan in 1947 (Showa 22), it welcomed many guests as one of Atami’s representative inns and was beloved by Japan’s leading writers, including Yamamoto Yuzo, Shiga Naoya, Tanizaki Junichiro, Dazai Osamu, Funahashi Seiichi, and Takeda Taijun. It is now open to the public as a cultural property of Atami City. A lush garden that feels far removed from the town center. The main building (Japanese wing) and detached annex retain the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. A Western-style building blends decorative elements and styles from Japan, China, and Europe, creating a unique atmosphere. These elegant facilities will be preserved as historical and cultural heritage for future generations. Please visit and see it for yourself. Izusan Shrine Izusan Shrine, the birthplace of many place names in Izu. Famous as the spot where Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hōjō Masako were united, it is also known as a shrine for matchmaking. In the Edo period it was called Izu Daigongen, and Tokugawa Ieyasu visited the shrine, giving it a long historical significance. Climb the long stone steps to the precincts and enjoy a superb view overlooking Atami City and the sea. From the main hall to Motomiya, the route passes the worship pavilion, Hakusan Shrine, and Yui Myojin Honsha, taking about an hour. We recommend a leisurely mountain walk while offering your prayers. About 800 steps below the main hall is Soyu Jinja Shrine, where the god of hot springs is enshrined. The annual grand festival takes place over three days from April 14 to 16, drawing many visitors. Address/708-1 Izusan, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture 413-0002 Phone/0557-80-3164 Access/Take a bus bound for Nanao from JR atami station for about 10 minutes and get off at Izu‑san Shrine Front Parking/Free (5 spaces) ※The 837 steps count covers the route from Izusan Beach (near the running hot spring) up to the main hall. (From the city road with the Izu‑san Shrine Front bus stop to the main hall is about 200 steps; from Japan National Route 135 to the main hall is about 600 steps.) ※Beyond the main hall and the Izu‑san Local History Museum toward Motomiya, the path becomes a mountain trail, so please take care.

Omiyanomatsu Statue of Kanichi and Omiya Since the Meiji era many celebrated authors lived here and wrote masterpieces in Atami. Among them, the most famous is Konjiki Yasha (The Golden Demon), a novel by Ozaki Koyo that was serialized intermittently in Yomiuri Shimbun and Shin Shosetsu from 1897 for six years. The novel inspired the pine known as Omiyanomatsu and a popular song that begins "Strolling along Atami’s beach…" Together they spread like wildfire, and the protagonists Kanichi and Omiya captured the nation’s imagination as if they were real people. The Statue of Kanichi and Omiya and Omiyanomatsu stand along the coastal national road and draw many visitors as a photo spot. Every year on January 17 (the tearful parting day of Kanichi and Omiya), the Ozaki Koyo Festival is held at this site. Kinomiya Shrine Kinomiya Shrine has long been revered as a deity of good fortune and auspicious beginnings. Beside the main hall stands a sacred camphor tree designated a National Natural Monument, said to be about 2,100 years old with a trunk circumference of 24 meters. It is famous as a power spot. Legend holds that circling the trunk once adds a year to your life, and many visitors pray here for longevity, healing, and good health to share in the tree’s vitality. It is also said that those with a wish should quietly circle the tree without telling anyone; doing so helps clarify the wish. The tree is lit up at night, offering different expressions in the morning, daytime, and evening. The annual grand festival takes place each year from July 14 to 16. "Bushido is found in death." Experience the life and death of a samurai in SAMURAI Calligraphy. Samurai calligraphy calligraphy of resignation is a calligraphy in which a samurai looks back on his life when he foresees his death and writes his last words on earth with a brush. In the Warring States Period, before the last great battle of the war, the battle of Osaka, SAMURAI foresaw his death, looked back on his life so far, and left one last character on the world's largest calligraphy paper. “武士道とは死ぬこととみつけたり” 侍の生と死のあり方をSAMURAI書道で体験します。 SAMURAI書道(辞世の書)とは、侍が死を予見したときにこれまでの人生を振り返り、この世での最後の文字として筆で書き残すもの。 戦国時代、最後の大戦である大坂の陣という戦を前に、SAMURAIは死を予見して、これまでの人生を振り返り、世界最大の書道紙に最後のひと文字を残しましょう。

Osaka no Jin⚔Before participating in the war, there was an angel at Osaka Castle with a free hug sign hanging from his neck. The samurai refused the angel's hug, not wanting to taint it... and the angel made a sad face. The expression on his face is like watching a loved one die right in front of your eyes. The samurai wanted to protect this purity. However, he could not say anything lightly to the angel whose whole body was crying. The angel said as he wiped away his tears as if he had distilled only trust and goodwill towards others. "Thank you very much for today... but... Samurai-san and I... are not... friends yet." Angel was desperate. ``How can I become your friend?'' He handed me a homemade shuriken origami. His hands were shaking. The samurai had no words to answer, and was unable to look into the angel's eyes... A stifling voice came out of the man's mouth as he remained face down. The samurai was crying. Then, he gently hugged the angel.

Thatched village in Miyama, Kyoto It is a famous composition and a classic, but it is a place that can be said to be the gateway to Miyama I would like to see this wonderful scenery for many years to come, but when I come to the countryside, I always feel that it can be preserved forever, especially in areas with a large number of elderly people due to the declining birthrate, and I have been to the museum, but it is difficult to maintain it, and I feel that it is very difficult for the people who will inherit this history to pass it on to future generations.
