Potato digging A potato field tended as a hobby. After October began, about seven of us gathered on a holiday and went to dig potatoes! First we removed the weeds and leaves lying on the soil, then used digging forks to unearth the potatoes carefully without piercing them. After digging them up, we left them in the sun for a while to dry their skins, then sorted the potatoes by size—large and small—and put them into bags before loading them onto the truck. My leg muscles still ache even after two or three days (laughs). It felt great to work up a good sweat after such a long time!

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the opening!
Hakone Komagatake Ropeway resumes operation on Wednesday, September 20
A superb view from the sky connecting the shores of Lake Ashi and the highest observation deck in Hakone

The "Hakone Komagatake Ropeway" located in Pleasure Land Hakoneen on the shore of Lake Ashi in Hakone had been suspended since June 19 for annual inspection and repair work, but resumed operation on Wednesday, September 20.

The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway is a ropeway that connects Hakoneen Garden located on the shores of Lake Ashi with the summit of Mt. Komagatake with a total length of 1,783 meters in 7 minutes one way. At the top of Mt. Komagatake is the highest observatory in Hakone, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Hakone like a miniature garden centered on Lake Ashi below, the majestic Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps to the northwest, Suruga Bay, the Izu Peninsula, and the Shonan coast to the Miura Peninsula and the Boso Peninsula.

It opened on April 27, 1963 and will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2023. We have prepared various events to express our gratitude.

I went to see the autumn leaves of Lake Chimikep! At first glance, the autumn leaves begin to appear ... It's like that. There are some trees that are colored in places, but they don't seem to be overall yet. According to a person from the Chimikep Hotel, "It is later than usual, and it has been cold lately, so we will be able to see autumn leaves in the future." It was said. Could it be because of the prolonged heat...? Lake Chimikep under a cloudy sky also has an atmosphere, so Yoshi! The fun is a little further ahead ☺️.

Osmanthus fragrans has bloomed. Inside Roadside Station Kam in Nishiokoppe Village there is a greenhouse where they grow plants that have difficulty thriving in Hokkaido’s climate. When I entered the greenhouse in early October, a wonderful fragrance filled the air. Rows of osmanthus fragrans and Osmanthus heterophyllus were blooming side by side. The small orange blossoms are osmanthus fragrans. The slightly whitish ones are Osmanthus heterophyllus. People on Honshu say that smelling the scent of osmanthus fragrans makes them realize, “Ah, autumn has arrived.” If you stop by the Roadside Station, please take a walk through the greenhouse and enjoy the scent of autumn! The Flower Park charges an admission fee until October 15th; after that date it will be open free of charge.

Autumn in Japan... Speaking of which, I have a strong image of the mandarin flowers blooming on the far shore, and I can't forget the Kinchakuda I went to five years ago. During the Coronavirus pandemic 2 years ago, all the flowers were cut before flowering. It was unavoidable, but I watched the news with a very sad feeling. This year, the Coronavirus pandemic will return to normal after the event, so I went there because I wanted to see the bright red carpet again, but the Kinchakuda was still a masterpiece. This year Coronavirus pandemic it was crowded with many people, just like before, and it was this autumn that I realized the joy of the dawn of the Coronavirus pandemic that everyone's feelings are the same.
