Izayoi 🌕 October 6 was the harvest moon, and October 7 was izayoi (the sixteenth night) 🌕 I just learned that “十六夜” can be read as “izayoi” 😲 It’s my first time knowing that 😅 On both nights the bright moon lit up the sky😍 These photos were taken on the night of the 7th 📷 You can see my trials to capture the moon’s surface in shots four and five 😅 I stitched together moments between clouds and kept adjusting the camera, and somehow managed to take a beautiful shot 😆 Can you see the rabbit? 🐇 Maybe my camera skills have improved just a little bit 😂

I wanted to see the moonlit view of the three mountains of Hakuba reflected in Happo Pond, so I visited by night hike on a night when the moon was out and there was no wind. The view of Mt. Hakuba, Mt. Tsurushi, and Mt. Hakuba reflected in the Happo Pond is the best.

Japan view of Mt. Yarigatake from Okuho Takadake, the world-famous Northern Alps. The sun was rising, and the pitch-black world was illuminated with red. We climbed to the top of the mountain in the middle of the night and waited patiently in the freezing temperature of 1 degree Celsius. It was worth waiting while shivering in the cold, and we were able to welcome the best sunrise.

Nature Contact Lecture Series at Kawayu Visitor Center Kawayu Visitor Center will host two lectures in the Nature Contact series. In October, Tomoko Yoshikawa, Professor Emerita of the Faculty of Agriculture at Tamagawa University, will present “Life in Volcanic Lakes: Ecological Connections of Lake Kussharo.” In December, Mitsuhiro Nakagawa, Researcher and Specially Appointed Professor in the Faculty of Science at Hokkaido University, will give a talk titled “Why Is Lake Kussharo So Shallow? The Secrets of Atosanupuri Volcano Revealed by Recent Research.” Our region spreads around the Kussharo Caldera, shaped by major volcanic activity. Lake Kussharo, Japan’s largest caldera lake, stands as a symbol of Akan-Mashu National Park and has nurtured a wide variety of life thanks to volcanic bounty.
