Deaibashi and Todorokibashi ❚ Oita Bungoono Geopark Located in Kiyokawamachi, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, are Deaibashi and Todorokibashi. This area boasts the largest and second-largest arch spans of stone bridges in Japan, making it a very precious location. Todorokibashi measures 32.1 meters, making it the largest in Japan, while Deaibashi measures 29.3 meters, ranking second. Deaibashi was completed in 1924, built by the local residents as an important road connecting the community. Todorokibashi was completed in 1934, historically constructed as a bridge for a forest railway transporting timber. Furthermore, these two bridges have been recognized as Civil Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers for the fiscal year 2025, drawing renewed attention as historically valuable landscapes. You can drive close to the area, and Todorokibashi is still used as a road bridge. In contrast, Deaibashi is a pedestrian bridge, allowing visitors to enjoy its unique charm on foot. Wagashi, the world of traditional Japanese confections, has a great variety of individual treats, each with their devoted fans. Broadly generalizing, it may be said that they feature anko(red bean paste) as often as not, and invariably go well with green tea. Monaka sandwiches anko between two crispy rice crackers, while Taiyaki is a similarly crispy batter made into a distinctive fish shape, again with anko inside. These are perhaps two of the most famous Wagashi. Monaka has inspired a variety of monaka-style ice cream sandwiches you can find in any convenience store, and Taiyaki is unforgettable as the snack that looks like a fish. A similar snack with even longer roots is more of a no-nonsense round cake, fluffier than Taiyaki, chewier and thicker. Its delicious and filling, but perhaps the most noteworthy thing about it is what it is or isn't named. The pictured round delicious treat has not been able to settle on a single name across the country. In Kanto, where most visitors may gravitate, it is known as Imagawayaki. Outside the capital region, you may be more likely to hear Obanyaki, a name evidently spreading out from Shikoku. In Osaka and Kyushu, it may be called Kaiten-yaki, Taiko-yaki, or Taiko-manju. In Hyogo the -yaki convention is entirely discarded, and it is widely known as Gozasoro, the term almost universally used in Himeji. Incredibly, these don't count for half the known names for this snack. This makes for a fun game when you see at at festival stalls or in market streets travelling across Japan. What name will it have when you find it?

Roadside Station Kume-no-Sato Gundam 563-1 Miaoi, Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture At the roadside station "Kume-no-Sato" in Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, an astonishing sight unfolds that will make you do a double-take. There, a gigantic robot towering at 7 meters stands majestically! This 7-meter tall mobile suit was designed by Shoichi Nakamoto, a resident of Tsuyama City, who was born in 1964 and was 35 years old at the time of completion. He single-handedly crafted it based on his own design documents, conceptualizing a bipedal manned general-purpose machine that can be piloted by a person in the cockpit to walk and perform various tasks. After seven years of work, it was completed in December 1999 (Heisei 11). After graduating from a local technical high school, Nakamoto worked as an engineer for an automobile manufacturer. However, feeling that he had to pursue the creation of the mobile suit, he convinced his parents and returned to his hometown, continuing the project in between his daily job. Now, knowing that this Z Gundam has a cockpit, who wouldn't think, "I want to ride it too!"? In fact, this Gundam can be piloted on the festival day held once a year. The festival is called the "Sennin Matsuri" at the roadside station Kume-no-Sato. Limited to 120 groups, you can experience the cockpit ride. Riding the Gundam on festival day is reminiscent of the opening scene of ∀ Gundam.

Today, December 8, is "Rice Day" 🍚✨ Satoyama no Yume, a branded rice from Shobara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, won first place in the "Osaka Residents’ Most Delicious Rice Contest" and is a carefully selected rice with a taste score of 80 or higher. By creating a branded rice, Satoyama no Yume aims to build an environment where young people can take up farming with hope, contribute to agriculture and regional development, and bring dreams and aspirations to the community. This rice packs the dreams of satoyama farmers. To promote circular agriculture by reusing bamboo that damages farmland, farmers spent years experimenting to achieve this proud flavor. They cut bamboo into powder, ferment it for use as fertilizer, and use oyster shells—Hiroshima Prefecture’s specialty—to replenish soil minerals. These practices contribute not only to great taste but also to building a sustainable society that cares for the environment.
