The Kanaoka Town Bon Dance Festival, the largest event of the Kanaoka Town Residents’ Association, takes place on August 14th and 15th 📣 Each of the 11 neighborhood associations carries a uniquely decorated large drum as they parade, and they make a bold procession into Kanaoka Shrine, which sits at the heart of Kanaoka Town 👀 On the 15th, the neighborhood on duty that year performs the final shrine entry as the climactic “tori.” After the shrine entries on both days, all 11 neighborhood drums gather around the yagura inside Kanaoka Shrine. This is a festival with a history of over 100 years in which young people carry taikodai (drum floats) through the neighborhood while singing and dancing Kawachi ondo and Goshu ondo.✨ Drums over three shaku (about 90 cm) are placed on carrying poles and carried by groups of about 20 to 30 people as they parade. Nishinikarishite Returns Summer 2023 Nishinikarishite took place at GA.KOPPER guesthouse in Nishiokoppe Village. A day of live-noise bon odori echoed through the whole village of Nishiokoppe. For its second edition this year, the festivities span two days. Alongside music, food, and the noise bon odori, the program is packed with ghost stories and shadow puppetry, deer butchering, silk-screen printing and bookbinding workshops, and much more. On day one the venue is the old school building of the closed Kamiokoppe Elementary School, and on day two the event moves to guesthouse GA.KOPPER. Both days open at 10:30 AM, start at 11:00 AM, and finish around 9:00 PM. Admission is free on day one; day two costs 5,000 yen (free for junior high school students and younger). After 7:00 PM on day two, entry is free for everyone. Tickets can be purchased online in advance. You may also pay at the reception on the day of the event. (The price is the same either way.) The gymnasium of the former Kamiokoppe Elementary School will be open as a rest area at night. Dance on the Night of Lanterns In Nishiokoppe Village every year, the Bon dance in the Kamiokoppe area takes place on the 14th and the Bon dance in the Nishiokoppe area takes place on the 15th. Some campers and riders come to Nishiokoppe just for these two nights! That makes us very happy. To the beat of the drums, we dance two songs: the children’s Bon dance and the Hokkai Bon Uta. If you dance both fully, it easily runs over an hour. Dancing for such a long time made me realize how much energy it really takes. And the best part of Bon dance is the costumes, right? Who will come in what costume is a mystery until the day itself. Seeing the adults go all out in costume and dance in a circle somehow lifts your spirits.
