A breathtaking photograph capturing the winter scenery of the Kushiro River in Hokkaido. The river’s surface is covered with *renban-koori* (lotus-leaf ice), a rare phenomenon that appears only during the coldest months. As the ice drifts silently downstream, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, it creates a mesmerizing and otherworldly beauty.

The mouth of the Kushiro River opens to the west, making it one of Hokkaido’s premier spots for viewing sunsets. Amid the harsh winter cold, the golden-lit *renban-koori* presents a stunning spectacle that can only be witnessed here. For capturing this rare and precious moment, we have selected this photograph as the grand prize winner.

The traditional Japanese event of *mochi-tsuki* (rice cake pounding) is an important custom for welcoming the New Year. In particular, community and family *mochi-tsuki* gatherings remain a cherished tradition, enjoyed across generations.

This stunning photograph powerfully captures *Umaoi* (horse driving), a breathtaking winter tradition at Tokachi Ranch in Hokkaido. The sight of horses galloping through the snow, kicking up powder as they run, creates a dynamic and awe-inspiring scene that perfectly blends the raw energy of the animals with the vast, untamed beauty of winter nature.

The expansive Tokachi landscape and the crisp winter air further enhance the sense of movement and vitality in the horses. Tokachi Ranch is also a training facility for horses that compete in Hokkaido’s *Ban’ei* horse racing, and the sight of these strong, well-trained horses in full stride is truly spectacular.

The moment captured here—of horses thundering forward in unison—is a true winter spectacle unique to Hokkaido. For its ability to convey the pulse and power of the scene, we are pleased to award this remarkable piece an honorable mention.

This stunning photograph beautifully captures the enchanting sight of Sunomata Ichiya Castle in Sunomata Town, Ōgaki City, Gifu Prefecture, wrapped in a blanket of snow. The castle, cloaked in silvery white, harmonizes perfectly with the historic bridge and surrounding castle town, creating a scene reminiscent of a painting.

Sunomata Ichiya Castle is said to have been built during the Sengoku period by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (then Kinoshita Tōkichirō). True to its name, legend has it that the castle was constructed in an astonishingly short time.

Its snow-covered form adds an even more majestic aura, evoking a deep sense of historical romance from the age of the samurai.
