Tokachi Hills, a garden on a gentle hill in Makubetsu, is hosting Rose Week until Sunday, July 13. At the entrance, you can borrow leisure sheets and baskets for free and enjoy a picnic inside the garden. The café attached to the shop serves soft-serve ice cream, rice balls, curry and more. This time I had a chilled white corn soup made with Memuro-grown corn. There is also Garden Cafe NIWAKARA in the garden, where you can enjoy lunch or a reservation-only afternoon tea while looking over the grounds. Secret Garden Starting from Shintoku Station, if you head toward Shintoku Hireya, you come upon a lovely garden. This is a private residence, but the owners said, “We want not only the people of Shintoku but many others to come and see it,” so I paid a visit. The garden is full of the owner’s love for flowers, affection for Shintoku, and memories of a loved one. However, a while ago some rose saplings were dug up and stolen, which was very sad. They may have been plants tended with great care, and above all they may have held deep sentiment. I don’t think anyone who reads this post and comes by would do anything hurtful, but since this is a private home, please view the garden respectfully. If the owner or the gardener is working in the yard, say hello and they may show you their lovely inner garden. If no one is there, please enjoy looking into the inner garden from the outside. At the ‘‘Kokuei Bihoku Hillside Park’’ in Shobara City, Hiroshima Prefecture—situated almost in the exact center of the Chugoku region—the rose garden has reached peak bloom starting Wednesday, May 21, 2025! Colorful roses are in full bloom, and each one is beautiful. This rose garden was newly established in 2020 on roughly 400 square meters and features 118 varieties and 206 repeat-blooming rose shrubs. To enliven the north area and enhance the garden’s appeal, we began collaborating with rose enthusiasts from Shobara City in July 2024 to improve fertilization, perform detailed pruning, and train plants on arches and fences as part of ongoing cultivation and maintenance. We have added varieties such as Michelangelo and Christian Dior to further enrich the rose garden. The garden is expected to be at its best from mid-May through late July and again from mid-October through late November. Wakazono Park Rose Garden 2-4 Masago, Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture Admission is free! During the rose season, I look forward to the rose garden in Wakazono Park every year. ◆Toyooka Iris Garden◆ The Iris Garden sits on a terrace mid-slope with a high vantage point offering panoramic views of the Central Alps. Around 1938, various flowers were grown as a hobby, but after visiting Lowrys Garden in Aoki Village and seeing the wide range of iris colors, sizes, and shapes there, I became captivated by irises and began buying bulbs. As the number of cultivated varieties exceeded one hundred and space grew tight, the garden was relocated to its current 30-are (3,000 m²) plot of farmland. At the village’s request to open the site to visitors as a tourist garden, I acquired a landscape coordinator qualification in 2002 and opened the iris garden to the public in 2003. Iris cultivation dislikes high heat and humidity, which leads to frequent diseases, and the plants need replanting and soil replacement about once every three years, so maintenance is demanding. Still, we continue to cultivate them in the hope that visitors will find comfort in the sight of the flowers in full bloom.
