Isehara Flower Report – March 30, 2026

Here is today's update on cherry blossom blooming in Isehara City.

Somei-yoshino cherry trees are blooming beautifully across the city and are now at their best.
Around Isehara Station, you can casually enjoy hanami at Isehara Daijingu, Kanzan Park, and Chizu Park.

Cherry blossoms are also at their peak at Sannomiya Hibita Shrine, Hinata Yakushi, Jyohatsu-ganji Temple, the General Sports Park, and Fujiyama Park.
On MtOoyama, blooms are progressing around Kasumi Bridge, while the Ooyama cherry trees are still a little short of full bloom.

Along the Shibuta River, you can enjoy cherry blossoms together with moss phlox, creating a colorful, spring-like scene along the riverbank.

Hinata Yakushi First Yakushi Notice
Hinata Yakushi will hold the “First Yakushi” on January 8, 2026.
On the day, the principal image will be publicly displayed and medicinal rice porridge will be served.
Please visit to pray for a year of good health and the absence of illness.

Notice of the Special Exhibition of the Treasure Hall at Hyuga Yakushi
This fall, an exhibition will specially display precious temple treasures that delve into the history of Hyuga Yakushi.
Organized by the Isehara City Council for Preservation and Use of Local Cultural Properties, the exhibition centers on the city-designated cultural property, the woodblock printing plate of the Den Myosawa Fudo (Den Myosawa Fudōson), and generously exhibits many temple treasures that are not usually on view.
Come and see for yourself the breath of a long history and the crystallization of faith and craftsmanship that have been passed down.

Here is today’s update on the spider lilies in Hyuga.
In the Araimizu area they continue to bloom beautifully, as they did last week. If you are driving, please use the temporary parking lot at the Human Resources Development Center.
The grounds of Hinata Yakushi appear to have just passed their peak viewing period.
Along the walking path behind the Hinata Yakushi bus stop, the flowers have also started to fade slightly.
This walking path’s gate is open from 7:00 to 17:00.

Here is today’s update on the cluster amaryllis in Hyuga.
They are blooming beautifully in the Aramizu area. If you are coming by car, please use the temporary parking lot at the Human Resources Development Center.
White cluster amaryllis can be seen on the grounds of Hinata Yakushi.
The walking path behind Hinata Yakushi bus stop is open from 7:00 to 17:00.
Also, a temporary tourist information desk will open on Saturday the 27th and Sunday the 28th (9:30–15:00).

Hyuga Mushiokuri
The traditional event “Hyuga Mushiokuri,” held since the Edo period, will take place.
Mushiokuri is a folk ritual performed across Japan to protect crops from pests.

On the park's north side, a vivid carpet of rapeseed flowers and delicate Kawazu cherry blossoms 🌸 are in peak bloom together, creating a spectacular sight.
At the top of the stairs, the flowerbeds host a colorful mix, including Christmas roses.
Below the park, the almond trees' buds are swelling and will bloom soon.

Isehara Flower Report — January 31, 2025
The days are still bitterly cold. With the Setsubun Festival on Sunday, February 2, weather is on everyone’s mind, so dress warmly when you go out.
Walking along the Oyama koma approach, you’ll be soothed by the sweet scent of the yellow, delicate flowers of robai (wintersweet).
Plum blossoms are beginning to open here and there. Many buds remain, but it’s exciting to watch the blooms progress from now on!

The robai beside the torii in the parking area is still beautiful.
Most plum trees in the grove are still in bud, but you can see a patch of rapeseed flowers blooming toward the back.

The plum trees beyond the stairs are developing many buds; the white plums have not opened yet, but red plums are starting to bloom.

The wax-like, yellow, dainty flowers of the wintersweet (roubai) are beginning to reach peak bloom in some spots ahead of the plums. The swelling plum buds only add to the anticipation!

Hinata Yakushi Hojobo First Yakushi Opening of the Principal Image 2025
On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the Hatsuyakushi ceremony was held at Hinata Yakushi, counted as one of Japan’s Three Yakushi, to pray for a year of good health and household safety.
On the temple grounds, visitors were served yakushi-gayu, a medicinal rice porridge made with vegetables and rice cakes produced in Isehara City, and many worshippers attended.
The principal image, the nationally designated Important Cultural Property of the Yakushi Triad, is unveiled only on five days each year: this Hatsuyakushi day, the first three days of the New Year, and the spring annual festival.

If you missed this opportunity, please come to the last unveiling of the year on April 15, the spring annual festival, which also features the sacred-tree-climbing ritual where yamabushi begin their mountain training from Hinata.

New Year in Isehara 🎍 2024–2025
Information on Ōyama operations and parking during the New Year holidays
Ōyama in Isehara is said to be the first place in Kanagawa Prefecture where you can see the first sunrise of the year. The expected time to see the first sunrise from the summit of Ōyama is 6:45 AM.
Also noteworthy is Hijirimine (a sacred peak), accessible by a roughly 2.5-kilometer uphill walk from Sannomiya Hibita Shrine of about one hour, where you can enjoy a spectacular 150-degree wide-angle view of the first sunrise rising to the left of Enoshima from the summit.
From New Year’s Day 2025, Isehara will be full of New Year events.
We have compiled information for each location; please check the details and dress warmly before you go.
Please note that many people visit Ōyama during the New Year season, and severe congestion and traffic jams caused by cars waiting for parking are expected. Please use public transportation whenever possible.
When it is dark underfoot, bring lighting as needed (flashlights, headlamps, etc.).

Isehara Flower Update 2024.10.3
The red spider lilies in Hinata are coming into full bloom around each bus stop. Blooming has also started at Hinata Yakushi.
Many visitors continue to come to the area around Hinata Yakushi Bus Stop.
Here are the red spider lilies near Hinata Yakushi Bus Stop as of yesterday.
There were many buds near Takahashi Bus Stop, and while some early bloomers are fading and being replaced by new ones, the flowers should remain beautiful for about a week, so please come soon!

Yesterday, at the Oyama Fire Festival bonfire Noh performance, I enjoyed the mystical world lit by the torches! The red spider lilies along the Oyama Shindo are also at their best! Don’t miss them!!

This year the blooms are not opening all at once as in past years; flowering varies by location. Many shoots with buds were seen. Depending on the temperature, they may bloom rapidly.
Hinata Yakushi is running late and only about one third of the flowers are open now, but it’s worth a visit during your shrine visit!

The Hoden (storage) will be temporarily closed from Monday, July 22, 2024 to Wednesday, July 24, 2024 due to the risk of heatstroke.

*Hydrangeas on the shaded path in the Hinata area*
When Hojo Masako visited Hinata Yakushi in the Kamakura period,
the old road she is said to have taken is now lined with hydrangeas.

They are beginning to color and are at their best!

You can enjoy them for some time yet.

What looks like surrounding flowers is actually
modified sepals: the decorative flowers.

The small clustered flowers in the center are the bisexual flowers,
which can seem to represent family bonds.

Hyuga Yakushi Spring Annual Festival
On Monday, April 15
Selected as one of Kanagawa’s Top 50 Festivals
It is the most grand and solemn event of the year,
This year’s final unveiling of the hidden principal image, the iron-axe carved Yakushi triad, took place
Sacred tree climbing (shigi nobori) and a fire-walking ritual were also performed.

Blessed with good weather, the festival drew many worshippers.

A tea ceremony by the Urasenke school, led by the Iwata Soubun group, was also busy on the temple grounds.

Located near the entrance to the main approach, two Kongorikishi guardian statues stand there in a protective stance: the open-mouthed Agyo and the closed-mouthed Ungyo, preventing enemies of the Buddha from entering the temple.

Treasure Hall
Housing the principal image and a collection of cultural properties that includes eight items designated by the national government and two designated by the prefecture, the national designations alone total 23 Buddhist statues enshrined together. There is no other example in eastern Japan where so many designated cultural properties are kept in one place.

Plum Blossoms

Under a chillier sky than yesterday, the red plum blossoms are proudly in full bloom.
A beautiful weeping plum tree stands in the grounds of Hinata Yakushi, and its view beside the stone lanterns is very picturesque. There is a plum grove on the back hill. Small, charming white plum blossoms are beginning to appear here and there.
I found plum trees on a slope inside the Sports Park. These are vivid pink red plums. Cherry trees surround them, making this a spot full of spring blooms.
