Makomo and Bamboo Autumn Festival in Hase District ❚ Held on September 27, 2026 The "Makomo and Bamboo Autumn Festival in Hase District" will take place in Inukai Town, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture. Makomo (the Japanese bulrush) is a perennial grass from the rice family, traditionally used for food, crafts, and rituals. The swollen part of its stem is called Makomodake and is edible. The Makomo displayed at the venue has been cultivated on previously abandoned farmland. Compared to rice cultivation, it requires less maintenance and is expected to purify water during its growth, leading to its adoption as a new crop in the region. The 39th Ontake-ryu Kagura Festival ❚ Held on October 25, 2026 The 39th Ontake-ryu Kagura Festival will take place at "Kagura no Sato Noba Park" in Kiyokawa-cho, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture. The main feature, Ontake Kagura, is said to have begun with the establishment of Ontake Shrine in the first year of Hōtoku (1449). In 2007, it was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the national government. Inukai Stone Buddha ❚ Oita Bungoono Geopark The Inukai Stone Buddha is located in Inukai Town, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture. This rock-carved statue, etched into a cliff by the Ono River, depicts a Fudo Myoo (Acala) with a height of approximately 3.8 meters. While many may envision Fudo Myoo with a stern expression, this stone Buddha is known for its gentle, rounded face. Flanking it are standing statues of Seitaka Doji and Kongara Doji, carved closely beside it, with the characters "Ryūdenzan" also inscribed on the rock face. Nearby, a Gorintō (five-storied pagoda) stands, creating a tranquil space that evokes a sense of history by the quiet riverbank. On July 11, 2026, hydrangea flower picking took place around Fukoji in Asaji Town, Bungoono City. About 50 participants carefully picked the hydrangea flowers blooming in the temple grounds and surrounding areas. Thank you very much to everyone who helped out.
