Ōtōin The founding of Oto-in is unknown, but it is believed that it was built in the Nara and Heian periods, and that the monks of the Tendai sect lived there to pray to the dead. It is recorded that Daito-in became a Soto School temple in the first year of Keicho 1596. Otoin Temple is a family temple where the ancestors and deceased members of the Dan family are memorialized. In addition, as a temple open to the community, we are actively engaged in cultural activities such as concerts using the main hall temple con, art exhibitions in the gallery, history study groups, small Buddha carving classes, calligraphy classes, flower arrangement classes, etc., and we continue to be active as a temple open to the community as a family temple for the Dan family. It is said that this large ginkgo was used as a landmark of Hananoi Village during the Tone River water transportation in the Edo period. Even now, you can see it well from the Ōtone Bridge. According to the "Chinju Forest Tree Survey Research" Implementation in 2004 Heisei 16, ginkgo biloba 5.32 m is considered to be the thickest trunk circumference in Kashiwa City. In 1981 Showa 56 1981, it became a designated protected tree designation number 290 in Kashiwa City. ・Bentendo Bentendo, built in 1864, was demolished due to deterioration in the Showa 50. The inauguration ceremony of the current Bentendo was held in November 1998 Heisei 10 1998. The Bentendo enshrines Benzaiten, an eight-armed statue with the god Uga and a Torii shrine gate gate above his head. In his hand, he holds a long halberd, an orb, and a key to the treasury. The crocodile mouth attached to the old Bentendo Hall is engraved with the names of 24 donors from the tenth year of Tenpo 1839, indicating that the Bentendo has existed since ancient times. This crocodile mouth is attached to the Shin Bentendo and still resonates with the sound of the Tenpo era.

Why not explore Tateyama by bicycle? Located on the southern Boso Peninsula, southern Boso traces about 120 km along the coastline. The inland routes offer plenty of elevation changes, making the scenery and sense of accomplishment ideal for experienced riders. For beginners, we recommend leisurely coastal rides where you can enjoy the scent of the sea and the views on a relaxed cycling route. The Tateyama City Tourist Association rents electric bikes that make hills easy, as well as sports bikes for long distances such as cross bikes and road bikes! We also offer bicycles with child seats and kids’ bikes, so we recommend these routes for families too! For more information, please contact the Tateyama City Tourist Association at 0470-22-2000!

Goma throws a goma tree into the flame in the altar to ward off evil and calamity, purify one's desires, and fulfill one's aspirations. It is an esoteric ritual to ask. At Oyama Temple, once a year usually on February 28 a special event is held. Godangoma sets up altars in front of the Five Great Myō Kings, places a fire furnace in front of each altar, burns milk, etc., and prays to the Honzon. We burn the firewood of our troubles with the fire of wisdom and pray for no illness and disaster, increased profits, and respect. This ceremony is visited by many pilgrims from far and wide, and it is crowded with bonfires all day long. Even if you look at the whole country, it is rare to see a goma performed at the five altars. The Godan Goma practice is a special event held once a year, but the regular Goma prayer is held every day, and it is a valuable experience that anyone can participate in. In the solemn atmosphere of Oyama Temple deep in the mountains, please spend a moment to wash your heart. Away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, you can purify your mind and body by participating in the ritual of Goma and return to your daily life with a new mindset. Please enjoy this precious opportunity to bring peace and moisture to your heart along with the solemn atmosphere of the temple. Anyone can participate, so feel free to ask.

Tateyama City Tourism Association

Nice to meet you! This is the Tateyama City Tourism Association. Tateyama City sits at the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula, blessed with rich nature and a mild climate. On the Cool Japan Video account, we share plenty of information on Tateyama’s attractive sightseeing spots and recommendations. Please follow us! With a population of about 43,000, Tateyama enjoys a mild annual average temperature of 16°C. The city’s west faces the southern end of Tokyo Bay, and its south faces the Pacific Ocean (Sotobo), offering marine sports like scuba diving and seaside bathing. Prefectural Tateyama Wild Bird Forest in the city is selected as one of the 100 best forests for forest bathing, and areas near Hirasunaura Beach are chosen for the 100 best white sand and green pine trees and Japan’s 100 Best Roads. ■ Seven recommended sightseeing spots in Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture! [ Tateyama Castle and Shiroyama Park ] This park was created by restoring the former castle grounds of the Satomi Clan, a Sengoku-period feudal family in the Boso region. At the top of Shiroyama Park stands Tateyama Castle (Hakkenden Museum), which exhibits materials related to Eight Dogs of Satomi. Seasonal flowers such as plum, camellia, cherry blossoms and azaleas bloom throughout the park. [ Minato Oasis Nagisa no Eki Tateyama ] The site includes Umi no Marche Tateyama, where you can buy fresh seafood and local specialties, a large aquarium, the Seaside Plaza and an observation deck—facilities enjoyable for children and adults alike. [ Awa Shrine ] Awa Shrine, the ichinomiya of Awa Province, has a sacred tree over 500 years old, and the sea-eroded cave ruins on its grounds are designated as a prefectural historic site. In spring, the Somei Yoshino cherry trees form a “cherry blossom tunnel” that welcomes hanami visitors. [ Daifukuji Temple (Gake Kannon) ] Called “Gake Kannon” because a Kannon hall stands on the cliffside midway up MtFunagata. A 1.5-meter-tall Kannon statue is designated as a tangible cultural property of Tateyama City. [ Sumisaki Lighthouse ] An observation platform near the lighthouse offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. On clear days you can see Mount Fuji. [ Boso Flower Line – Rapeseed Blossoms ] The roughly 46-km Boso Flower Line along the coast features rapeseed flowers and marigolds, offering seasonal scenery year-round. The approximately 6-km stretch from Ito to Aihama is also selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Roads. ■ Tateyama City events and festivals [ Yawatanmachi ] In 2004, Awa Yawatanmachi was designated a Chiba Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property. As the largest festival in the Awa region in southeastern Chiba Prefecture, floats and portable shrines parade through Tateyama’s streets. [ Tateyama Kanko Festival Tateyama Bay Fireworks Display ] Every August about 10,000 fireworks are launched near Hojo Beach. Underwater fireworks and massive star mines light up Tateyama’s summer night sky. ■ Local specialties of Tateyama City [ Boshu Fans ] Boshu Fans, one of Japan’s three major uchiwa alongside Kyo-uchiwa from Kyoto and Marugame Fans from Shikoku, were designated a traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2003—the first such designation in Chiba Prefecture. This tradition, passed down since the Meiji era, continues to the present day. ■ Enjoy sightseeing in Tateyama City The rapeseed fields stretching along Tateyama’s beautiful coastline, the tranquil atmosphere of historic shrines and temples, and local specialties together keep captivating visitors. The scenery changes with each season, so you can discover new delights and moving moments any time of year. Cool Japan Video brings you recommended information about Tateyama City—please look forward to it!

Spring in Japan is all about cherry blossoms. Kawazu cherry blossoms bloom earlier than Someiyoshino, signaling that spring is near. The wild bird "Mejiro", which had never been seen before, is coming in search of nectar from Kawazu cherry blossoms. Kawazu cherry blossoms shine in the bright blue sky, and if there is a komejiro, it is "the first in spring". In a world where war is spreading, while looking at the Kawazu cherry blossoms on a calm day, I feel that I am happy to have been born in such a wonderful country.

[Isehara Flower Report] 3.01 Okame cherry blossoms along Oyama Shinmichi are beginning to bloom March starts today. I felt the arrival of spring as graduation ceremonies seemed to be taking place at high schools across Isehara City. Spring news is coming from MtOoyama too♪ Okame cherry trees have been planted along the roughly 3-kilometer stretch of Oyama Shinmichi (bypass), and pink blossoms are beginning to open. The trees at the foot are still young, so their trunks are thin and they seem to bloom earlier. Overall, it feels like flowering is a little early this year due to warm temperatures. They should reach their best viewing next week. Seeing the flowers from the car window makes a drive more enjoyable.
