Shintoku Tourism Association
Mar. 14, 2024
As the Nemuro Main Line segment between Shintoku and Furano nears closure, Shintoku Station has been getting busier. Since early this month, the station has hosted a "Thank You, Nemuro Main Line" panel exhibition; visitors stop to view the photos and take their own pictures. In the nearby waiting area, a few customers can be seen enjoying station bento boxes made by local restaurants. According to staff at Stella Station, the station kiosk, Wednesdays feature Shintoku jidori rice (Shintoku free-range chicken rice bento), while other days offer a Tokachi yakiniku bento. Both are very popular. If you're visiting Shintoku Station, please take a moment to create a page of memories of the Nemuro Main Line while savoring the flavors of Shintoku and Tokachi.

The “Thank You Nemuro Main Line” panel exhibition is now on display! A panel exhibition reflecting on the history of the Furano–Shintoku section, which will close on March 31, has opened inside Shintoku Station. The panels include a timeline tracing the line’s history from the 1900 opening of the Asahikawa–Shimofurano section, which marked the starting point for eastern Hokkaido, together with about 40 historical photos showing the railway and local scenery. Shintoku Station, which will be decommissioned at the end of this month, has drawn many railfans, and it was striking to see visitors studying the panels today.

Goma is a esoteric Buddhist ritual in which wooden votive sticks are cast into the flames on a platform to dispel misfortune, purify wishes, and pray for the fulfillment of great aspirations. At Oyama-dera, a special annual event (typically held on February 28) features the Five-Platform Goma practice. For the Five-Platform Goma, five altars are set up before the Five Wisdom Kings, with a brazier placed in front of each altar. Offerings such as milkwood are burned as worshippers pray to the principal deity. The fire of wisdom burns the fuel of earthly desires as participants pray for good health, increased blessings, and deep respect and affection. This ceremony draws many worshippers from afar and fills the temple with the bustle of continuous goma fires throughout the day. Nationwide, goma performed on five platforms is a rare sight. While the Five-Platform Goma is an annual special event, regular goma prayers are held daily and offer a precious experience open to anyone. In the solemn atmosphere of mountain-shrouded Oyama-dera, you can spend a moment of spiritual cleansing. Away from the noise of daily life, taking part in the goma ritual purifies body and mind and lets you return to everyday life with renewed spirit. Alongside the temple’s reverent atmosphere, this valuable opportunity brings peace and refreshment to the heart. Anyone may join, so you are welcome to make your request casually.

Snow Drawing After an unusually warm spell, snow is falling across many areas again. In Nishiokoppe, snow has once more covered the ground. On the wide white canvas, we used colored water made with food coloring to draw pictures and write words! We prepared three food-color shades: red, yellow, and blue. The children mixed them to create greens, browns, and even blacks. They scooped up the colored snow and showed it to us. By the way, the temperature was minus 7°C. Even with a fire going, you can’t hide the cold in your feet… Thanks to the bonfire, we could also enjoy roasted marshmallows, so that made it all worth it.

It is a "Hinamatsuri" event in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. At the former Yamamura family residence in the Hamasaki Denken district, a checkered doll called "Hoko-san" was also on display. "Hoko-san and Hoko dolls" are generally given to celebrate the first festival of a baby girl. In the past, they were dressed in maternity clothes, which were also given to the celebration, and decorated with Hina dolls. It seems like everyone is staring at you, and I'm a little intimidated.

Snow-Covered Miya-no-Mori The third Wildlife Class for the village elementary school students This time, the theme was “Let’s Search for Treasures in the Winter Forest!” The highlight was a snowshoe treasure hunt through Miya-no-Mori, which spreads across and above the ski area. Each treasure had a transmitter attached, so using a tool called a Yagi antenna, the children traced signals while climbing up and down the slopes. When listening to the sound from the receiver, everyone focused and strained their ears to find the direction with the least noise. The weather was clear. With the air so crisp, it was an ideal day for walking through the snowy Miya-no-Mori. The kids seemed a little disappointed that the many treasures they found were not food or warm drinks, but they did take home venison stew as a souvenir. On a personal note, I was also happy to reunite with the university student I met during the summer camp session.

Akita prefecture is a breathtaking destination that boasts of magnetic wilderness and a perfect climate for growing the most delicious apples you have ever tasted. During my recent visit to the Yokote Kamakura Festival, my eyes were caught by the sight of sugar-coated, bright-red Akita apples that looked incredibly tempting. Without second thoughts, I grabbed one and took a bite. The sweetness was unlike anything I had ever tasted before, and it left me craving for more. It was truly an exhilarating experience!

Fuji, Yatsugatake, and the Southern Alps in the background, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons, and it is also known as the birthplace of the Kai Takeda Family. In addition to fruits such as grapes and peaches grown in the land rich in nature, the mellow aroma and flavorful wine are also exquisite! Fuji ◇ ❖ ◆ 【Mt. Amari】 The Mt. Amari in Minami-Alps UNESCO Eco Park has been selected as one of the Yamanashi Hundred Famous Mountains. The parking lot is about a 30-minute walk to the summit, so you can easily enjoy climbing and hiking. The view from the top is spectacular, and if the conditions are right, you can see Mt. Fuji floating in a sea of clouds. Don't miss the Astragalus azaleas, which bloom around the beginning of June! 【Crocodile Mound Sakura】 The 330-year-old Ipponzakura tree that blooms on the alligator mound was designated as a natural monument of Nirasaki City in the first year of Heisei. In the background of the towering cherry blossom trees, you can overlook Mt. Fuji and Yatsugatake, and it is also popular as a photo spot. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, they are lit up and you can enjoy a fantastic atmosphere. 【Takeda Hachimangu】 Takeda Hachimangu Shrine was founded in 822 AD and is associated with the Kai Takeda Family. The Main Shrine was rebuilt by Lord Takeda Shingen and is also an important cultural property of Japan. 【Nirasaki Omura Memorial Park】 At Omura Memorial Park, you can experience art at the Nirasaki Omura Museum of Art, where paintings and ceramics collected by Dr. Satoshi Omura, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, are exhibited, enjoy cooking at the soba restaurant, refresh your mind and body at the hot spring for a day trip, and deepen your learning and interaction with people at the Hakuyuki Dormitory. Please spend a meaningful time with the scenic scenery that changes its expression with the seasons. 【Ruins of Shinpu Castle】 The ruins of Ruins of Shinpu Castle were built by Prince Takeda Katsuyori in 1581 on the plateau of Shichiri Rock. The Ruins of the Castle was set on fire by the Oda and Tokugawa forces 68 days after its construction, but it is a castle ruin that conveys the culmination of the Takeda family to this day. From the Ruins of the Castle, you can see a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji and Yatsugatake, and around the beginning of April, the whole area blooms like a pink carpet, and Shinpu Momogengo is a superb view! 【Kayagatake】 The final resting place of Hisaya Fukada, the author of "Japan's 100 Famous Mountains". From the summit of the mountain, which is about 1704 meters above sea level, you can overlook a 360-degree panorama of Mt. Fuji and Yatsugatake. Because the mountain looks very similar to Yatsugatake, it is nicknamed "fake eight". ◆❖◇Events and festivals in Nirasaki City◇❖◆ 【Fukada Festival】 In addition to being active in the literary world such as numerous mountain books, novels, and travelogues such as "Japan's 100 Famous Mountains", this event will be held at Kayagatake, the final place of the mountaineer "Hisaya Fukada", who left a great mark on the Japanese mountain world. At the Fukada Festival, a memorial ceremony and a commemorative mountain climb are held every year to commemorate his legacy. 【Summer Illumination in Nirasaki】 The Ministry of Education's anthem "Tanabata-sama" begins with "Sasa-no-ha, Sarasara, Kiba-ni, sway...". The poet who wrote the Tanabata in a nursery rhyme is "Hanayo Gondo" from Nirasaki City. In Nirasaki City, as the birthplace of Hanayo Gondo, illuminations and Tanabata decorations inspired by Tanabata are held every summer. 【Memorial service for fallen Takeda warriors, Fireworks display in Narasaki, Takeda no Sato】 Approximately 6,600 fireworks, including star mines, will be launched in the night sky of the main venue, Kamanashigawa River Park. Many food stalls are also lined up at the venue to liven up the festivals. 【Illumination in Nirasaki】 Approximately 60,000 bulbs of light, including a 7-meter-high tree, heart-shaped objects, and illuminations with the motif of cherry blossoms on an alligator mound in full bloom, vividly color the Nirasaki Station Square. ◆❖◇Other recommended information in Nirasaki City◇❖◆ Furusato Nozei in Nirasaki City offers fruity wine made from 100% Nirasaki grapes, Koshu whiskey recommended for highballs, and fruits such as fresh peaches and grapes as thank-you gifts. [Fujiya Hotel] Limited-time sale until Thursday, February 29: “Petite Pomme” and “Hakone Anzan Ensemble”! Fujiya Hotel has launched a limited-time sale of two collaborative items—“Petite Pomme” and “Hakone Anzan Ensemble”—created with students from Kanrei Shirayuri Gakuen High School, at the Bakery & Sweets Picot. The sale runs from Saturday, January 27, 2024, through Thursday, February 29, 2024. Supporting the school’s PBL (Project Based Learning) program, this collaboration came together through shared commitment to the initiative. Under the theme “Develop a new specialty to turn Gen Z into repeat visitors,” students and the hotel’s bakery chefs held repeated discussions. From the first meeting, it took about six months to reach the product launch. Prototype items were sold at the school festival, and, based on questionnaire feedback, the products were further refined. The students’ opinions guided improvements to the recipe, pricing, and promotional methods, shaping the final commercial breads. Please enjoy these items born from a collaboration between students with fresh, next-generation sensibilities and the reliably developed flavors Fujiya Hotel has refined over many years. [Sales location] Fujiya Hotel Bakery & Sweets Picot [Sales period] Limited time only: Saturday, January 27, 2024–Thursday, February 29, 2024 [Hours] 9:00–17:00

Odawara Flower Garden 2024 Plum Festival ~About 300 varieties and 500 plum trees in full bloom~ The Keiryu Plum Garden is a vivid plum grove planted with about 300 varieties and 500 flowering plum trees, from early bloomers to late bloomers, boasting one of the largest selections of varieties in the Kanto region. This year’s theme is “The Shapes of Flowers — The Individual Charms Created by Petals.” We introduce the differences in flower shapes and blooming styles by variety. Please enjoy the delicate beauty of the plum blossoms. Focus on Red Plums in 2024! This year’s theme is “Red Plum — The Brilliant Flower Plum,” highlighting red-plum varieties. The difference between red plums and white plums is not the flower color but the color of the pith when the tree’s trunk is cut. This year we focus on this lesser-known way to tell them apart and on the characteristics of red plums. Enjoy the appeal of red plums through the quiz rally and informational panels installed throughout the plum garden.
