Hello to everyone watching Cool Japan Video! This is Nagiso Tourism Association. Nagiso town in Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture, is a town of about 3,600 people located in the southwest of Nagano Prefecture. Ninety-four percent of the town is forest, and about 70 percent of that is national forest. The town is made up of seven areas: Yogawa, northern Kakizore, Midono, Tsumago, Araragi, Hirose, and Tadachi. In Cool Japan Video we will introduce Nagiso town’s charms in depth, so please look forward to it! ◆History of Nagiso town, Nagano Prefecture◆ Nagiso prospered during the Edo period as a post town on the Nakasendo, the route connecting Kyoto and Edo. Tsumago inn and Midono inn still preserve the old streetscapes where travelers once met and culture flourished. ◆Tourist attractions in Nagiso town, Nagano Prefecture◆ Tenpaku azalea colony Located in Tenpaku Park, this massive colony of mitsuba azaleas is designated a town natural monument. At peak season in spring, some 400 azalea plants paint the park in beautiful pinks and whites. From the park’s hill you can also get views of Mount Kiso-Komagatake and the surrounding landscape. Tsumago Yado Preservation District Maintained as the 42nd post town from Edo on the Nakasendo, Tsumago still strongly reflects the atmosphere of the Edo period. In 1976 it was designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. At Wakihonjin Okuya you can experience traditional life around an irori hearth. Strolling the old streets lets you feel the timeless romance of travel. Kakizore Canyon Considered one of the most beautiful gorges along the Kiso Road. In spring you’ll see azaleas and rhododendrons, and in autumn the canyon’s foliage is stunning, making it a year-round scenic spot. Using the nature trails and riverside walkways, you can view granite-carved falls such as Ushigataki Waterfall and Kiriga Falls. Tadachi Falls The name Tadachi Falls collectively refers to waterfalls in the Otaki River gorge, including Uru Falls, Rasen Falls, Senshin Falls, Kiriga Falls, Amakawa Falls, Fudo Falls, and Somen Waterfall. In 1990 Tadachi Falls was selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, and in 2020 it became part of Central Alps National Park. Yogawa Michi Yogawa Michi arose as a detour route when the Nakasendo became impassable due to flooding of the Kiso River. The moss-covered roadside stones and bamboo thickets along the forest road make it an excellent hiking course. Momosuke Bridge Completed in 1922 more than 100 years ago, this 247-meter wooden bridge is the largest wooden bridge in Japan. In 1994 it was designated a National Important Cultural Property. MtNagiso At 1,677 meters, MtNagiso was historically a mountain for Shugendo ascetic practice. The climbing routes offer steep and gentle slopes as well as chain sections. It is popular as a mountain that is accessible for day hikes. ◆Local specialties of Nagiso town, Nagano Prefecture◆ Surrounded by forests, Nagiso has long preserved woodcraft traditions. ‘Nagiso rokuro zaiku,’ a traditional technique in which boards and logs are turned on a lathe and planed with a kanna, is carefully crafted by artisans one piece at a time. The delicate beauty created by generations of skilled craftsmen captivates many people. ◆Festivals and events in Nagiso town, Nagano Prefecture◆ Tadachi Hanauma Festival Held each October to give thanks for a bountiful harvest, this festival features three Kiso horses adorned with saddles slowly parading through town. In 1993 it was designated a Nagano Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property. ◆Tourist information for Nagiso town, Nagano Prefecture◆ Nagiso town, Nagano Prefecture, offers magnificent natural scenery and a rich history that make it an appealing destination. The Suwa Grand Shrine Upper Shrine and Lower Shrine, said to be one of Japan’s oldest shrines, attracts many visitors year-round. In the Edo period the city prospered as the castle town of the Takashima Domain, and in the Meiji period it grew into a global center of the sericulture industry. ◆◆Tourist Attractions in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture ◇Suwa Grand Shrine This shrine is the head of Suwa Grand Shrine sites across Japan. The Upper Shrine is divided between Honmiya (Main Shrine) in Suwa City and Former Shrine in Chino City, while the Lower Shrine consists of Autumn Shrine and Harumiya in Shimosuwa Town, forming a two-shrine, four-shrines configuration. Built in the architectural style known as Suwa-zukuri, the shrine buildings are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan, and the shrine forests are prefectural natural monuments. A popular sightseeing course is the pilgrimage visiting the four shrines known as the “Shisha Mairi.” ◇Takashima Castle and Takashima Park Built about 420 years ago, the castle is nicknamed the “Floating Castle of Suwa” because Lake Suwa’s waters once served as its moat. The present castle tower welcomes many visitors as a museum and observation deck. Takashima Park inside the castle grounds is also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot. ◇Lake Suwa Located almost at the center of Nagano Prefecture, Lake Suwa is the largest lake in Shinshu with a shoreline of about 16 kilometers. The panoramic views of Mount Fuji, the Alps, and the Yatsugatake Mountain Range provide unforgettable scenery. Five breweries—the Suwa Gokura—stand in the city, and brewery-hopping tours to sample each sake are popular. ◆◆Local Specialties of Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture Suwa City produces a wide range of local specialties, including quince (marmelo) products, river fish products, sake, kanten (agar), and Shinshu miso, all grown and made locally. These items are known for their high quality and are highly regarded not only in local markets but across Japan. ◆◆Festivals and Events in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture ◇Onbashira Festival at Suwa Grand Shrine This traditional ritual of Suwa Grand Shrine has been handed down for over 1,200 years and takes place every seven years in the years of the Tiger and Monkey. The next festival will be held in 2028. ◇Suwa Lake Festival Fireworks Display on Lake Suwa Held annually on August 15, spectacular fireworks launched from platforms set on Hatsushima on Lake Suwa paint the lake with brilliant color. Tokachi Pork Workshop Yutaku, a popular tonkatsu restaurant in Obihiro✨ Founded in 1962 as a local butcher shop, this direct-run store selects pork raised in Tokachi, one of Hokkaido’s leading pork-producing regions. The meat undergoes low-temperature aging at their own factory, which tenderizes the pork and brings out its full savory flavor. 🥩 This time I had the hirekatsu set meal! It has less fat than the rosu, but it was freshly fried and crispy, and the meat was tender, juicy, and very delicious😋 They offer many other menu items, so be sure to give them a try💓 - Tokachi Pork Workshop YUTAKU✨ Founded in Showa 37 (1962), Tokachi Pork Workshop YUTAKU carefully selects pork from the Tokachi area, runs both a butcher and a restaurant, and operates its own factory. The meat used in the restaurant is processed using low-temperature aging, which softens the texture and fully brings out the pork’s natural sweetness. 🥩 This time I ordered a tenderloin pork cutlet, which has less fat than loin but is tender and juicy—very delicious😋 The shop also offers many other choices, so if you visit Tokachi or Obihiro, you should definitely stop by and try it!

The long week of the new school year is coming to an end. Here's a little reflection of March. [Implementation of study tour by junior high and high school students @ Tomi City] 3/23 Sat - 26 Tue As part of the Ueda-Tomi Study Tour, members of the Social Action Team of the Volunteer Department of International Secondary School attached to Tokyo Gakugei University visited Tomi City! While continuing the relationship with Ueda, this time the field was expanded to Tomi, and 14 junior high and high school students experienced Tomi for the first time Tomi was on the 1st day of 3/25. We actually visit the area, interacted with local people, and worked on a study tour to think about local issues together from the perspective of junior high and high school students. Tomi's theme is "How can people gather in Tomi?" It's huge! Because this was my first time in Tomi, I dared to ask them to grasp the charm of Tomi from multiple perspectives without being bound by the perspective of tourism. [Local people who cooperated this time] ⚪︎Cave Hatano Hatano-san ⚪︎SASAKI FARM 佐々木さん ⚪︎ Kodama Family Residence & Cafe Nei Kodama's family ⚪︎Unno Yado Kamishuya Asakawa-san * SASAKI FARM was specially accepted for training. Please note that it is not a tourist ranch. The junior high and high school students fell in love with the land of Tomi itself, and while touching the enthusiasm of Adults who took on the challenge of realizing their commitments and desires, they enthusiastically asked specific and Unfolding questions. Although it was only one day, I was very impressed by the way they tried to get to know Tomi deeply. At the end, the "charm of Tomi" that everyone felt at the Unno Yado Fureai Center was output in a short time. From the moment you unfold the imitation paper, the pen moves all at once! Impression by the enthusiasm of the junior high and high school students. I'm looking forward to the reports that will be compiled in the future. Tomi, like Ueda, I can't help but think that we can build a Gari with continuity. Tokyo Gakugei University International Secondary School Volunteer Department See you all in Tomi/ ・ ・ [Thanks] Thank you again to everyone in the community who cooperated with us!
