Yuzenn Shrine Founded in 749 (the first year of Tenpyō Shōhō). The shrine venerates the hot springs of Atami According to a divine oracle that spoke of a hot spring with the power to cure illness, a small shrine was erected to enshrine the deity. Since then, the shrine has protected Atami’s hot springs. To give thanks to Atami’s springs and pray that their flow never ceases, grand festivals are held every spring and autumn. The shrine’s votive plaques bear a long list of inn names, including those of inns that no longer exist, offering a glimpse into the history of modern hot-spring ryokan. In front of the shrine, the great hot spring source known as Oyu bubbles up; its intermittent geyser is also a local attraction. Izusan Shrine Izusan Shrine, the birthplace of many place names in Izu. Famous as the spot where Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hōjō Masako were united, it is also known as a shrine for matchmaking. In the Edo period it was called Izu Daigongen, and Tokugawa Ieyasu visited the shrine, giving it a long historical significance. Climb the long stone steps to the precincts and enjoy a superb view overlooking Atami City and the sea. From the main hall to Motomiya, the route passes the worship pavilion, Hakusan Shrine, and Yui Myojin Honsha, taking about an hour. We recommend a leisurely mountain walk while offering your prayers. Kinomiya Shrine Kinomiya Shrine has long been revered as a deity of good fortune and auspicious beginnings. Beside the main hall stands a sacred camphor tree designated a National Natural Monument, said to be about 2,100 years old with a trunk circumference of 24 meters. It is famous as a power spot. Legend holds that circling the trunk once adds a year to your life, and many visitors pray here for longevity, healing, and good health to share in the tree’s vitality. It is also said that those with a wish should quietly circle the tree without telling anyone; doing so helps clarify the wish. The tree is lit up at night, offering different expressions in the morning, daytime, and evening. The annual grand festival takes place each year from July 14 to 16. SAMURAIHONOR
Feb. 2, 2024
How to visit shrines and temples/神社参拝の作法 Samurai were born with a sense of honor. Honor was the highest good. The goal that a young man who wanted to become a samurai had to pursue was not wealth or knowledge, but honor. Honor was a goal to be pursued "within oneself," without regard to profit or loss. Therefore, "honor" that is concerned with public reputation is not real honor.

Setsubun Festival Tomorrow The festival will be held at three shrines in Isehara City. ・Lower Shrine of Oyama Afuri Shrine…Only for related parties and those who applied ・Sannomiya Hibita Shrine…Koban coin toss at 10:00, 12:00, and 15:00 ・Isehara Daijingu Shrine…Bean-throwing at 15:00 Oni out—fortune in! This ritual drives away evil spirits and prays for a healthy, happy year ahead. There is a tradition that eating as many beans as your age will bring good fortune. Lively bean-throwing ceremonies take place on the grounds of the three shrines in Isehara City. People dressed as the bean-throwing hosts line up on a temporary stage and, with calls, throw lucky beans all at once. The beans are packed in small bags with lottery tickets inside, and local children eagerly scramble to collect them. At Hibita Shrine, the demon-driving ceremony is a highlight and a traditional event. By the way, if you throw beans inside the house, don’t you sometimes find a bean you missed when doing the year-end big cleaning? For details, please see the Isehara City Tourism Association website.
