鎌倉幕府を開いた源頼朝より遡ること八代前の先祖の六孫王大神を主祭神、相殿に天照大神、源氏の守り神八幡大神を祀る。

清和源氏発祥の宮として１０月１０日には宝永祭が行われます。

神官の姿した子供、鬼、弓矢太刀を持った神人が練り歩きます。

境内には梅、桜、あじさい、蓮、アヤメ・カキツバタ、紅葉等もあり四季折々の散策を楽しむことができる。

長岡天満宮の御鎮座である長岡の地は、菅原道真公が御生前に在原業平らと共に、しばしば遊んで詩歌管弦を楽しまれた縁深い場所。境内にある「八条ヶ池」の中堤でもある参道沿いには、約100株・樹高約2.5ｍもの「キリシマツツジ」が真紅の花を咲かせています。
