Cycling Guide Tour – Fruit Sweets Plan Last weekend, a group of six joined our cycling guide tour! Under clear skies after the rainy season, we cycled while taking in views of the Alps and the Tenryu River. After arriving at the orchard, we went peach picking. The other day, I set out to discover a new walking course in the former Toyoda Village area, so I walked from JR Iiyama Line kaesa station to lotus station. I started at 6 a.m. while the air was still a bit cool, before it got hot. Listening to stories from staff born or living locally, I walked along the Chikuma River, through villages, and along paths surrounded by rice fields. I crossed the newly built Kanakura Kabeta Bridge and also admired it from below. Since I usually only drive over that bridge, the views felt fresh. Along the way I passed IiyamaLine trains about three times and was reminded how well walking, railways, and scenery go together. The walk took about three hours including breaks. There are still things to improve, but this looks like a refreshingly pleasant course!

Hiraide Ruins The nationally designated Hiraide Ruins rank among Japan’s three major archaeological sites. Situated about 2 kilometers southwest of JR Chuo Main Line Shiojiri Station, they lie on Kikyogahara, a vast stretch of vineyards. The site extends in a band along the Shibukawa, which flows from Hirade Spring, spanning about one kilometer east to west and 300 meters north to south. Major excavations that began in 1950 revealed that people lived at Hiraide from the Jomon period through the Heian period. Numerous dwelling remains and associated artifacts were unearthed. These abundant finds became fundamental sources for studying prehistoric and ancient cultures in the region, and the site received National Historic Site status in 1952. Excavations have continued since then, and to date more than 290 dwelling and building remains have been discovered. ◇Hiraide Museum The museum displays clay figures, pottery, stone tools, ironware and other items excavated from the Hiraide Ruins, along with artifacts from other sites in the city.
