#008 [Tourist Spot Feature Part 2 ✨] Introducing Tsuno Winery, a sightseeing spot with panoramic views of Tsunocho! We’ll do our best to make this a place you’ll want to visit! Tsuno Wine has won numerous awards at home and abroad, and Tsuno Winery, where that wine is made, is full of charm. Here we introduce that wine and the winery. ◆About Tsuno Wine Because Miyazaki Prefecture traditionally has a shochu culture, wine never took hold easily, and the region was said to be an unfavorable environment for grape growing. Even so, the foundation built by Momoto Eitomo 102 has been handed down, and Tsuno Wine is made with the ambition to create wines that can compete on the world stage. Tsuno Wine is known for its Campbell Early rosé, which was actually selected in 2004 for the Wine Report’s “World’s Top 100 Wines,” and this rosé still attracts many repeat customers. Every year many of their wines win awards at domestic and international competitions, drawing buyers from within and beyond the prefecture as well as online customers from overseas. They also offer wines that are easy to drink for those who usually dislike wine, and even wines made with Miyazaki’s famous mangoes. So what kind of place is the Tsuno Winery where these wines are produced? ◆What kind of place is Tsuno Winery? Tsuno Winery sits on the Makiuchi Plateau, surrounded by Hyūga Nada and the Mount Osuzu range, offering sweeping views over Tsunocho. The site is famous as a night-view spot and for unbeatable views of the town’s fireworks. The site includes a shop with wine and a bakery, a wine brewery, and vineyards, and offers guided tours. You normally can’t enter the brewery, so it’s hard to know exactly how it’s laid out, but there is a spot in the shop where you can glimpse inside. You’ll be surprised by the size of the machinery! I haven’t personally been to the vineyards, but there is a row of grapevines by the parking lot, so you can get a pseudo-experience. And above all, the shop! It carries dozens of wines with detailed descriptions, making it easy even for beginners to choose. If you still can’t decide, someone knowledgeable about wine is usually nearby to ask. Beyond wine, the shop stocks many snacks that pair well with the wines, giving wine lovers a delightful dilemma. The shop also houses a bakery, attracting many visitors who come just for the bread. The selection is wide and changes day by day, which adds to the fun. When you visit Tsunocho, be sure to stop by. Next time in our tourist spot feature, we’ll cover the town’s roadside gateway, Roadside Station Tsuno. Stay tuned!!

On this day, foodie Kawanishi followed the usual sweet scent and dropped by @suwa_clover. The person who spoke with me that day was the owner, Mr. Komatsu. It seems clover has been here for about ten years. At first, his mother handled the register while Mr. Komatsu focused on baking. Now he appears to manage everything on his own. The first thing that surprised me and caught my eye upon entering was the huge variety of cookies!!! There are so many kinds of cookies. For cookie lover Kawanishi, it was a heavenly time 🍪🎶 When I asked why, I got an unexpected answer!? “The reason is, I love cookies!!!” — his words were so wonderful they stopped time, right? 🤣 You can tell, without being told, that cookies made by a cookie-loving owner are special 🍪 Tarts are a top recommendation, but the cookies are a top recommendation too!!! They also offer message cookies, which many people order in large quantities as a substitute for a farewell message card when someone retires, or for those who are a bit shy about expressing their feelings. And above all, the “original cakes”! As you can see on clover’s website, the beauty of their original cakes is stunning!!! They look almost too beautiful to eat!!! You need to reserve in advance, but if you provide a portrait or photo, they can create a custom-made cake! How about a one-and-only original cake just for you!? Lastly, a little secret: the drip coffee is a completely original blend made exclusively for clover’s cakes by a friend of Mr. Komatsu who selected the perfect coffee to pair with them. If you want a coffee you won’t find elsewhere, this is a must ☕!!! ◎ clover 📍 Suwa City, Kogandori 4-10-21 ☎ 0266-57-0374 ◎ Hours: Friday, Saturday, Sunday 10:30–18:00 ◎ Closed: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday ◎ Parking: About four spaces in front of the shop ◎ Website: https://suwa-clover.com//

Fukkoji Hydrangeas ❚ Bloom Update as of June 20, 2025 Fukkoji Temple sits in Asaji Town, Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture. It is also famous as a hydrangea sightseeing spot. The hydrangeas are now just past their peak viewing period. This year there are fewer blooms than usual, but they are blooming beautifully. Temperatures exceeded 30°C several days this week, so some hydrangeas look tired, but the later-blooming ones are flourishing. We will keep posting bloom updates. Location: Kamiozuka, Asaji Town, Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture Access: About 10 minutes by car from JR Asaji Station Parking: Available (free) Restrooms: Available ❚ Fukkoji Temple The bas-relief Buddha carved into the temple grounds, including its pedestal, stands about 11 meters tall and is one of Japan’s largest cliff carvings. The central colossal figure is Fudo Myoo (the Immovable Wisdom King). Fudo Myoo normally appears with an angry expression, but years of wind and rain have rounded his features into a gentle face. Despite his size, this Fudo Myoo has a very approachable presence. Fukkoji is also known as “Hydrangea Temple” because so many hydrangeas are planted there. During the rainy season you can see many hydrangea blooms alongside the bas-relief Buddha. The hydrangeas are cared for by the temple and local community. ■■■ Access to central Bungo-Ono City ■■■ About 3 hours by car from JR Hakata Station, Fukuoka Prefecture About 2 hours by car from JR Kumamoto Station, Kumamoto Prefecture About 1 hour 20 minutes by car from JR Beppu Station, Oita Prefecture About 1 hour 20 minutes by car from JR Yufuin Station, Oita Prefecture ■■■■■■■■■■■■ Introducing sightseeing and recommended spots in Kyushu, Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture ■■■■■■■■■■■■

Hello to everyone watching Cool Japan Video — nice to meet you! We are the Miyoshi City Tourism Promotion Organization. Miyoshi City, located in northern Hiroshima Prefecture, sits at the meeting point of the San'in and Sanyo regions. This nature-rich, montane area is a town where history and culture thrive. Surrounded by the Chūgoku Mountains and blessed with abundant forests, clear streams, and the Gonokawa River, Miyoshi has long prospered as a hub of travel and exchange. As a tourist destination, it offers a variety of attractions: ancient myths and yokai folklore, traditional performing arts, local specialties such as wine and cheese, and spectacular scenic spots. In Miyoshi, where nature and history blend with contemporary art, local ingredients, and everyday life, you can enjoy a relaxed trip away from the bustle of the city. ◆Access to Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi City in Hiroshima Prefecture lies about 90 km north of Hiroshima city, roughly a 1 hour 30 minute drive, making it conveniently accessible. You can reach the area via the Chugoku Expressway at Miyoshi Interchange or Miyoshi-Higashi Interchange, and it is also about a one-hour drive from Hiroshima Airport. By train, JR Geibi Line’s Miyoshi Station serves as the gateway. Direct trains run from Hiroshima Station, and the scenic views from the window make the journey popular. Express buses also run frequently from Hiroshima Station and Hiroshima Bus Center, offering a convenient option. Within Miyoshi City, rental cars and local buses are well organized, making it easy to get around to tourist sites. ◆About Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi City lies in northern Hiroshima Prefecture, bordering Shimane Prefecture. The city occupies a basin surrounded by mountains, with the Gonokawa River, Basen River, and Saijo River flowing through it. As of April 2025, the population is about 47,000. The modern city was formed in 2004 through a merger of eight surrounding municipalities, and it ranks among the largest municipalities by area in Hiroshima Prefecture. Agriculture and forestry remain important industries, and in recent years the city has promoted tourism that leverages local resources, with wineries and direct-sales markets and other community-focused facilities flourishing. ◆History of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi’s history is ancient, appearing in mythic eras. The area is associated with Izumo mythology and preserves many kagura performances and legends. During the Sengoku period, Hieioyama Castle, once the stronghold of the Miyoshi Clan (later moved to Bikuma Castle), was built and the town developed as a castle town. In the Edo period, Miyoshi prospered as a post town on the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine Road and became an important river-transport relay on the Gonokawa River, thriving as a center of commerce and transportation. ◆Popular sightseeing spots in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture ・Miyoshi Mononoke Museum (Yumoto Koichi Memorial Japan Yokai Museum) This nationally renowned yokai museum in Miyoshi houses the collection of leading yokai scholar Yumoto Goichi. Today, June 16th, is "Japanese Sweets Day"! Introducing Japanese sweets and famous confectionery originating in Shobara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. (1) Milk Dango ・ Nostalgic taste that has not changed since the old days A Commitment Gastronomical delicacies made by mixing mochi powder, sugar, Water candy, honey, etc. on a milk base without using a single drop of Water. The nostalgic taste that has not changed since ancient times is popular. Milk Dango is manufactured and sold by Izumi Kowado, a long-established Japanese confectionery store located in Shobara City in northeastern Hiroshima Prefecture. It was released in Showa 9, and since winning a prize at the National Confectionery Grand Competition, it has won numerous honors in various places. It is no exaggeration to say that Shobara's Souvenirs are milk dango, and they have been loved for a long time as a front line. Please enjoy such milk dango as an accompaniment to Tea and danran. (2) Onbashi ・ Famous confectionery raised in Tojo Town that reminds me of Teishaku Gorge Enjodo's "Male Bridge" is derived from the natural bridge "Male Bridge of Teishaku Gorge" in Tojo Town, Shobara City. It is a two-layered confectionery reminiscent of a stone bridge. Underneath, moist cookie dough. On top is a sweet Famous Confectionery raised in Tojo Town with caramel and almond slices on top. At Enjodo, the best Ingredients are carefully selected and examined, and we try to bring out the original taste of confectionery by kneading techniques without using any [artificial synthetic coloring], [chemical synthetic preservatives], [additives such as bleach], etc. (3) Takeya Manju ・ Gentle taste that has continued since the Edo period Shobara City Tojo is proud of its Famous Confectionery of Takeya Manju. Takeya Manju Honpo started making buns in the Edo period. Since its founding, its signature products have been Sake Manju and Takeya Manju made with koji. Sake Manju is made from sake with clean water, and even if you take a bite, it has a gentle taste that you can't think of as a Sake Manju. Since it does not use additives, it can be safely eaten by children and the elderly. (4) Hibagon egg ・ A unique famous confectionery bearing the name "Hibagon" Famous confectionery "Hibagon no Tamago" created by love for the Township. In 1970, when Hibagon was spotted, the confectionery shop "Daikokudo" released "Hibagon Manju". Then, in 2003, I heard rumors of a merger Town/Village city due to the influence of the great merger of the Heisei era, and Squid I thought that "Hibagun" might disappear, so I developed and released "Hibagon no Tamago". It is a three-layered confectionery that imitates an egg consisting of "shell", "white meat", and "yolk". The "shell" consists of cocoa flavor, the "white meat" consists of white bean paste with condensed milk, and the "yolk" consists of yellow bean paste with sweet potato. Along with the appearance, the taste is also very popular. (5) Tabusa Yokan ・Yokan made in the town of Soryo with an elegant taste Carefully selected Hokkaido azuki beans are luxuriously used and carefully made over two days, and the original taste and aroma of azuki beans are brought out with delicious water unique to the countryside. Fukoji Hydrangeas ❚ Bloom Status as of June 10, 2025 Fukoji Temple is in Asaji Town, Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture. It is also famous as a hydrangea sightseeing spot. The hydrangeas are currently about 50–60% in bloom. Blooming has progressed considerably. We will update the bloom status as it changes. [Location] Kamiozuka, Asaji Town, Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture [Access] About 10 minutes by car from JR Asaji Station [Parking] Available (free) [Toilets] Available ❚ Fukoji Temple The bas-relief Buddha carved into the temple grounds, including its pedestal, measures about 11 meters in height, making it one of Japan’s largest bas-relief Buddhas. The enormous central figure is Fudo Myoo (Acala). Fudo Myoo is typically depicted with an angry expression, but years of exposure to wind and rain have softened this bas-relief into a rounder, gentler face. Though large, the Fudo Myoo here feels very approachable. Fukoji is also called “Hydrangea Temple” because so many hydrangeas are planted there. During the rainy season, you can see many hydrangea blooms alongside the bas-relief Buddha. The hydrangeas planted there are cared for by the temple and local community.
