Hiroshima Miyoshi DMO

Hello to everyone watching Cool Japan Video — nice to meet you! We are the Miyoshi City Tourism Promotion Organization. Miyoshi City, located in northern Hiroshima Prefecture, sits at the meeting point of the San'in and Sanyo regions. This nature-rich, montane area is a town where history and culture thrive. Surrounded by the Chūgoku Mountains and blessed with abundant forests, clear streams, and the Gonokawa River, Miyoshi has long prospered as a hub of travel and exchange. As a tourist destination, it offers a variety of attractions: ancient myths and yokai folklore, traditional performing arts, local specialties such as wine and cheese, and spectacular scenic spots. In Miyoshi, where nature and history blend with contemporary art, local ingredients, and everyday life, you can enjoy a relaxed trip away from the bustle of the city. ◆Access to Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi City in Hiroshima Prefecture lies about 90 km north of Hiroshima city, roughly a 1 hour 30 minute drive, making it conveniently accessible. You can reach the area via the Chugoku Expressway at Miyoshi Interchange or Miyoshi-Higashi Interchange, and it is also about a one-hour drive from Hiroshima Airport. By train, JR Geibi Line’s Miyoshi Station serves as the gateway. Direct trains run from Hiroshima Station, and the scenic views from the window make the journey popular. Express buses also run frequently from Hiroshima Station and Hiroshima Bus Center, offering a convenient option. Within Miyoshi City, rental cars and local buses are well organized, making it easy to get around to tourist sites. ◆About Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi City lies in northern Hiroshima Prefecture, bordering Shimane Prefecture. The city occupies a basin surrounded by mountains, with the Gonokawa River, Basen River, and Saijo River flowing through it. As of April 2025, the population is about 47,000. The modern city was formed in 2004 through a merger of eight surrounding municipalities, and it ranks among the largest municipalities by area in Hiroshima Prefecture. Agriculture and forestry remain important industries, and in recent years the city has promoted tourism that leverages local resources, with wineries and direct-sales markets and other community-focused facilities flourishing. ◆History of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture Miyoshi’s history is ancient, appearing in mythic eras. The area is associated with Izumo mythology and preserves many kagura performances and legends. During the Sengoku period, Hieioyama Castle, once the stronghold of the Miyoshi Clan (later moved to Bikuma Castle), was built and the town developed as a castle town. In the Edo period, Miyoshi prospered as a post town on the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine Road and became an important river-transport relay on the Gonokawa River, thriving as a center of commerce and transportation. ◆Popular sightseeing spots in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture ・Miyoshi Mononoke Museum (Yumoto Koichi Memorial Japan Yokai Museum) This nationally renowned yokai museum in Miyoshi houses the collection of leading yokai scholar Yumoto Goichi. In the summer of 2024, MOA Museum of Art presents the special exhibition Pokemon × Crafts: A Grand Discovery of Beauty and Techniques! What kind of “chemical reaction” would occur if Pokemon and traditional crafts met head-on? Twenty artists, from Living National Treasures to emerging creators, took on this question with full commitment. The works evoke Pokemon forms, gestures, and presences. Some trace memories from the games, such as evolution, trading, travel settings, and highly effective moves. Others lure Pokemon into everyday life as tableware, kimono accessories, and stylish obis. What will your encounter with the pieces waiting for you in the gallery be like…exciting, entrancing, smirking, or spine-tingling? Enjoy discoveries of beauty and technique amplified by multiplying powers. Seiko Sawada Memorial Museum This museum gathers representative works by Seiko Sawada, a native of Atami City who received the Order of Culture. It displays art across many fields, including numerous wood carvings, paintings, ink wash works, ceramics, prints, and calligraphy. There is a popular belief that if you hold hands beneath the entrance ceiling stained glass panel "Hiten," you will remain happy forever. The reflection of "Hiten" on the red granite floor is also beautiful, so visitors can enjoy the stained glass both overhead and underfoot. ● Seiko Sawada (1894–1988) Born Toshiyoshi. An artist awarded the Order of Culture and an honorary citizen of Atami City. He grew up by the sea in Atami and, at 19, aspired to become a sculptor. He trained under Yamamoto Zuiun, a leading disciple of Koun Takamura. Until his death at 93, he worked across many artistic fields, producing numerous wood carvings as well as paintings, ceramics, prints, and calligraphy. His powerful, life-filled, and poetic works speak to the hearts of many and evoke great romance. I went to the "Muttoni World Exhibition" held at the Museum of Dreams, which is a 20-minute walk from Hachioji Station. This is my third time at my favorite exhibition! At the "Muttoni World Exhibition", there are many karakuri music boxes on display, and each box takes about 5~20 minutes. By the time I finished watching the whole thing, two hours had passed, but I had a strange feeling that I was in a dream the whole time. A picture is worth a thousand words! Children up to junior high school students can watch for free, adults can watch for 750 yen, and people over 65 years old can watch for 350 yen. I highly recommend that you take a ✨ look!!

Opened in 1984 (Showa 59) as the “Hall of Shikkui Trowel Paintings: Chohachi Art Museum of Izu,” it exhibits about 50 works by Irie Chohachi, a master plasterer from Matsuzaki who gained renown in the Edo period. Chohachi developed a unique art form called shikkui kogane-e—plaster trowel paintings—that blends plastering techniques with the Kano school methods of Japanese painting, earning high artistic acclaim. Skilled plasterers from across Japan came together to create the building, which showcases traditional plastering craftsmanship. The museum won the Yoshida Isoo Award—often called the Akutagawa Prize of architecture—for its fusion of Edo-era and 21st-century design, and it has attracted attention as a world-class architectural work.

Hakone Ekiden Museum A display of the Hakone yosegi marquetry trophies awarded to the winners of the outbound race is now on view! Since 1997, with the cooperation of the outbound winners from the 73rd race onward, the Hakone Ekiden Museum has exhibited the Tokyo-Hakone University Ekiden outbound victory trophies in the museum’s special exhibition space through Sunday, March 31, 2024. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the Hakone Ekiden, and both the outbound and return legs drew loud cheers from along the course. The runners’ determined efforts to win left a powerful impression. The outbound victory trophies are crafted in Hakone yosegi marquetry, a traditional Hakone craft. Artisans combine woods of different colors to create patterns, so no two pieces are identical. Each trophy is therefore a one-of-a-kind championship cup in the world. Please come and see up close the valuable Hakone yosegi trophies provided for this special exhibition by three schools: Kanagawa University, Toyo University, and Soka University, each representing the races they won. Location: Hakone Ekiden Museum (special exhibition space) Exhibition period: Until Sunday, March 31, 2024 *Please note that the period and contents of the exhibition may change due to circumstances.* Opening hours: Weekdays 10:00–16:30 / Weekends and holidays 9:30–17:00 *Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.* Admission: Adults 650 yen / Elementary and junior high school students 450 yen (admission fee covers the exhibition) Exhibits: ■ Eleven outbound victory trophies from the 1997 73rd race onward ・Outbound winners for the 73rd, 74th, and 78th races: Kanagawa University ・Outbound winners for the 85th, 86th, 87th, 88th, 90th, 94th, and 95th races: Toyo University ・Outbound winner for the 97th race: Soka University

I went to the "Mucha Exhibition" held at the "Dream Museum", which is a 15-minute walk from Hachioji Station. I visit the Dream Museum several times a year, but the Mucha exhibition had more male visitors than other exhibitions. I wonder if there are many men who want to do beauty paintings. I have seen the Mucha exhibition at other museums before, and although the scale is small, there are many famous works, and not only paintings but also those printed on the packages of sweets of the time were exhibited, and the content was substantial. I was also happy that it was possible to take pictures inside the museum. There are plenty of goods, and I bought a lot of them. This Hachioji Dream Museum can be viewed for free for junior high school students and younger. In addition, the annual passport is quite reasonable at 1400 yen. Hachioji is not only rich in nature, but you can also enjoy shopping and experience various cultures. Why don't you study Japanese in Hachioji?

#Nitori Stained Glass Museum The president of Nitori actually went to England many times, transported the stained glass of churches that were being demolished due to the decrease in believers, etc., to Japan and exhibited them in Otaru. No matter how many times you visit, you will fall in love with its beauty. My family is a Buddhist and I just want to kneel. Jesus and the angels are lovely, but I like the lamb who looks up at Jesus Christ laughs. I would like to see it in a real church in Europe.
