This monitor tour was planned to let people from overseas know about Echizen Town.

Echizen Town has many historical places such as Echizen Crab and Echizen Pottery. I would like many foreigners to visit as a place where they can get to know Japan deeply.

The monitor tour was attended by 10 foreigners from the prefecture.

We will go sightseeing in Echizen Town for one day, and actually experience and listen to stories. All the foreigners who participated live in Fukui and speak Japanese well. There were people who could understand Japanese without an interpreter. So, all the explanations are in Japanese.

There were some technical words, but everyone listened attentively.

The tour starts from Echizen Coast. Unfortunately, I was not able to see the Echizen Crab auction that I had planned, but the "Echizen Morning Market Ka Thanksgiving Festival" is being held in.
The Echizen Morning Market is an Events Held in at the Roadside Station Echizen where you can enjoy seafood and snow crab, mainly at fresh fish shops.

Next, Visiting the site of the Echizen Crab Museum across the street. You can see the tools and history necessary for fishing in the paintings, the actual Echizen crabs and the creatures that live on the Echizen Coast.
There is not much explanation in English, but since you can see the real thing, anyone can easily enjoy it.

You can learn about the goodness and ecology of Echizen Crab, so you can learn a lot.

Snow crab dish for lunch! I want many people to enjoy the unique taste of Echizen Town.

After lunch, go to Tsurugi Shrine.
Tsurugi Shrine is a shrine related to the Oda Nobunaga clan. I would recommend this place to foreigners who like Warlords.
It may have been quite difficult to talk about Japanese gods appearing in shrines. However, there is no doubt that it is a story that is difficult to hear.

We Visiting the site of a clay factory that makes clay, which is indispensable for Echizen pottery, and listened in detail to the story of the soil of Echizen pottery. The soil used for Echizen pottery is from Echizen. Echizen pottery is made from the soil stage. In the past, soil was harvested even in rice fields, but after a long time, it is said that it is mainly taken from the mountains.

The soil is a blend of three types. There are fine, coarse, and in-between, and it seems that they use different things depending on the work, but it was a vacation and there were few machines moving, so it was difficult to and it. However, it was a very valuable experience to be able to walk around the factory.

The story of how the factory is devising ways to lead to the SDGs so that there is as little waste as possible is easy for foreigners to get used to.

Next, we went to the Ancient Kiln Museums. The Ancient Kiln Museum is Located in Echizen Pottery Village. Thereare I have been to the pottery Village many times, but this was the first time I entered.
You will be guided inside with commentary. The Museums has two floors. On the first floor, there are many pottery items that show the history of Echizen pottery. Many Documents by Professor Kuemon Water, a leading researcher on Echizen ancient kilns, are also on display.
The first pottery was Sueware, which came from the Korean Peninsula. It reminded me of a Japan history class.
The oldest Echizen pottery is said to be around 900 years old. Echizen pottery is one of the six ancient kilns. It is said that the six ancient kilns refer to pottery that has continued from the Heian period to the present day. Other Famous dishes include Bizen ware and Tamba ware. It is said that some foreigners are touring the six ancient kilns.
I enjoyed listening to explanations such as "What was the jar used for?" with quizzes. Pottery for preserving Sake and grain seeds is obvious to Japan people, but foreigners seem to have a different perspective and it.

The transition of Echizen pottery is very interesting for us to see. By all means, when you visit, please take your time and feel the changes of your own and other generations.

Finally, we went to the Echizen Pottery Hall. After learning about the soil and history, seeing the latest Echizen pottery works became more interesting and even more interesting.

Everyone enjoyed shopping for Echizen pottery.

There was also an ochoko that took advantage of the tenacity of Echizen pottery. By making it thinner, it is possible to carry Sake to the tip of the tongue, where it is easy to feel the taste of Sake.

However, depending on the country or region, there is no custom of eating seafood, or it is not edible. Squid is not good for some people, so be sure to check well in advance. Of course, there are foreigners who come to Fukui to see Echizen Crab.

Here are the favorites of the people I've met by country and region. Please refer to it.

・United States
Many people on the Saikai coast of the United States had the opportunity to eat lobster, so there was not much resistance. Sushi is a widespread part of Japan culture, so many people like raw fish.

・China
Even in China, it is a small yellowtail, but they eat crab, so Echizen Crab was happy to eat it. Crab miso and uchiko are also my favorite foods.

・Asia
Tastes change depending on which region of Asia you are in. The image is that shrimp are eaten, but raw fish depends on the person. Bangladeshi children were not in the habit of eating seafood, and sashimi and fish dishes in general were not favorite.

・Australia
Australia is a multi-ethnic country, and they are familiar with various food cultures on a regular basis. There are many people who like Japan sushi. Echizen Crab was also happy to eat.

・Europe
There are many countries in Europe that do not have the habit of eating fish, so be sure to check carefully.
Inland Australians didn't even like the smell of soup stock. Danes, who have a habit of eating salmon, also have sashimi depending on the person. If you are used to it on a regular basis, you will be desensitized to the smell of fish and the taste of dashi, so be careful when you go to the fish market.

・Israel
Judaism forbids eating seafood without scales. Shrimp and crabs fall under this category, so check with Jewish people in advance. Some sects of Islam do not eat seafood such as shrimp and crabs in the same way. The food varies greatly depending on the religion, so be sure to check carefully.

A French chef came to Japan wanting to join Takefu Knife Village.

He came to Japan seeking nature and quiet places rather than crowded tourist spots.

He said he is more interested in a worn, ordinary shrine that feels like real life than a picturesque shrine for photos. It makes him feel a living culture.

He recommended spots like Kotohirayama-gu, which are uncrowded and worth seeing.

He was intrigued by Yukyuu Roman no Mori (Eternal Romance Forest)
The waterwheel there caught his eye, and he liked the thatched-roof lodging.

Traditional crafts are famously popular when people think of Japan. He was keen to try pottery workshops.

He also loves nature. He thought walking from town to the shoreline would be enjoyable—people seem to love walking.

He most wanted to try Echizen crab. He hoped to return during the crab season to taste this luxury.

Hello! This is the Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation.
Fukui Prefecture has become one of the most talked-about regions now that the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension has made access from Tokyo much easier.
We will share information about Fukui’s sightseeing spots, gourmet food, and more. Please look forward to it!

◆About Fukui Prefecture
Fukui Prefecture faces the Sea of Japan in the Chubu region. On March 16, 2024, the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended between Kanazawa and Tsuruga, reducing the fastest travel time from Tokyo to 2 hours and 51 minutes.
About 80 percent of Japan’s dinosaur fossils have been excavated in Fukui Prefecture, earning it the nickname “Dinosaur Kingdom” and making it home to many dinosaur-related facilities.

Facing the Sea of Japan, Fukui is one of Japan’s premier fishing grounds, where you can enjoy fresh seafood.
Especially Echizen crab, Wakasa fugu (pufferfish), and Echizen Flounder are high-quality specialties you can only taste here.

Fukui is also one of the world’s leading eyewear production centers, manufacturing 95 percent of Japan’s frames.

◆Popular sightseeing spots in Fukui Prefecture
Fukui is broadly divided into four areas:
◇Awara, Sakai, and Fukui City area
◇Eiheiji and Okuetsu area
◇Wakasaji area
◇Tannan area

◇Awara, Sakai, and Fukui City area
・Tojinbo
Tojinbo, a cliff-lined coastline stretching about one kilometer, is often used for dramatic climaxes in suspense dramas. It is recognized as one of the world’s three great scenic wonders, a National Natural Monument, one of Japan’s 100 geological sites, and one of Japan’s 100 best sunsets.
In recent years it has become popular as a spot to see the “green flash,” when the sun briefly glows green as it sets into the Sea of Japan.

・Fukui Castle Ruins
The castle ruins were built in 1606 by Hideyasu Yuki, the second son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Stone walls remain, and the site is a popular cherry-blossom viewing spot.

◇Eiheiji and Okuetsu area
・Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum
One of the world’s three great dinosaur museums, it displays about 50 dinosaur skeletons along with fossils, specimens, dioramas, and reconstructed models.
It is a spot that delights both children and adults.

・Daihonzan Eiheiji
A Zen training monastery founded by Zen Master Dogen, it still hosts many practicing monks.

◇Wakasaji area
・Mizushima
A small uninhabited island off the tip of the Tsuruga Peninsula, Mizushima is reachable by a daily ferry that operates during the swimming season.
Its beauty has earned it the nickname “Hawaii of the Hokuriku region.”

・Mikata Five Lakes
The five lakes—Lake Mikata, Lake Suigetsu, Lake Suga, Lake Kugushi, and Lake Hiruga—span Mihama Town and Wakasacho in Fukui Prefecture.
They are also called the “five colored lakes” because each has a different shade of blue.

◇Tannan area
・Murasaki Shikibu Park
Named for the Heian-period author Murasaki Shikibu, who spent time in Takefu City, the park features a gilded statue of Murasaki Shikibu wearing a twelve-layered kimono.

・Kazurabashi (Vine Bridge)
A rare vine suspension bridge measuring 44 meters long. A legend says couples who vow their love on the bridge will find eternal happiness.

◇Mikuni Festival
Held every May, this historic festival dates back to the Edo period. As one of the three major festivals of the Hokuriku region, its procession of float-mounted warrior dolls standing 6.5 meters tall parades through town in a powerful display.

◇Toro Nagashi and Grand Fireworks Festival
Held every August in Tsuruga City, this festival fills the sea with colorful floating lanterns against the backdrop of Kehi no Matsubara, while about 8,000 fireworks light up the night sky above the ocean.

◇Tsuruga Festival, Kehi Jingu Shrine Annual Festival
Held every September in Tsuruga City, this festival is famous as the “Long Festival of Kehi” because it spans 14 days.

■■■ Access
Rail and car travel provide convenient access to Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture.
The opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen has improved access from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
From JR Awara-Onsen Station on the Hokuriku Main Line, buses run to various locations around the city, making it easy to reach sightseeing spots. You can also drive via the Hokuriku Expressway, using Kanazu I.C. or Maruoka I.C.

■■■ Nature and Scenery
Sakai City offers many beautiful natural landscapes. The most famous is Tojinbo. Tojinbo is a series of sheer cliffs jutting into the Sea of Japan; formed over more than 10,000 years, its dramatic scenery overwhelms visitors. Nearby is Mikuni Port, where you can enjoy fresh seafood.

■■■ History and Culture
Sakai City is also rich in history and culture. During the Edo period, Mikuni prospered as a port for Kitamae-bune trading ships. The historic townscape of Mikuni Minato remains preserved today, and a stroll there evokes the atmosphere of the Edo era. The Mikuni Festival, held every May, features ornate floats parading through the streets and draws many visitors.

■■■ Local Specialties and Gourmet Food
Sakai City offers many delicious dishes made with local ingredients. Especially famous is Echizen crab. In winter, visitors flock to savor freshly caught Echizen crab. Also exceptional are Mikuni Port’s sweet shrimp, Fukui-grown Koshihikari rice, Wakasa beef, and Echizen soba, allowing you to fully enjoy local flavors.

■■■ Sightseeing Spots
Sakai City has plenty of attractions beyond its history and nature. Below are popular sights in Sakai City with their highlights.

■ Tojinbo
Tojinbo, one of Fukui Prefecture’s premier attractions, has served as the filming location for many dramas.
Facing the Sea of Japan, the cliffs rise more than 20 meters high and extend roughly one kilometer, presenting overwhelming natural beauty.
Such extensive columnar jointing is rare worldwide and is listed among the world’s three great columnar formations.
The sight of cliffs over 20 meters tall in succession is worth seeing. You can also enjoy a sunset cruise—the cliffs glowing in the sunset are unforgettable.

■ Mikuni Minato
This historic port town prospered in the Edo period as a Kitamae-bune port. The nostalgic old streets remain, offering a pleasant historical stroll. Notable sights include the former Kishina family residence, the former Morita Bank head office, and Mikuni Shrine.
You can also taste fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan and Mikuni’s spicy soba topped with grated karami daikon (hot radish).

■ Maruoka Castle
Also called Kasumi-ga-jo, Maruoka Castle is famous for having one of Japan’s oldest surviving main keeps. Built in 1576, it still stands today and is designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Castles and a National Important Cultural Property. In spring, cherry trees around the castle bloom beautifully, and the site is selected among Japan’s 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots for hanami.

■ Shibamasa World
A large family-oriented amusement park spanning 560,000 square meters.
It features one of the country’s largest dinosaur attractions and an indoor play area called Kids Paradise, making it a theme park you can enjoy all day.
In summer, it operates one of Japan’s largest resort pools and offers limited-time night pools.
Golf, barbecue, and other year-round activities are also available.

■ Echizen Matsushima Aquarium
This aquarium facing the Sea of Japan is popular for its dolphin and sea lion shows. It offers hands-on feeding experiences and overnight aquarium stays among many activities. With exhibits of various marine life, it entertains both children and adults.
