I photographed this at a light-up event held at Mamada Hachimangu Shrine in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture. The display of wagasa (Japanese paper umbrellas) was usually only shown on sunny weekends and was hard to see, but this time I visited for the first time. The autumn leaves were at their peak, the lighting was just right, and the wagasa stood out beautifully. It was a scene that truly evoked Japan.

In October, Tomoko Yoshikawa, Professor Emerita of the Faculty of Agriculture at Tamagawa University, will present “Life in Volcanic Lakes: Ecological Connections of Lake Kussharo.” In December, Mitsuhiro Nakagawa, Researcher and Specially Appointed Professor in the Faculty of Science at Hokkaido University, will give a talk titled “Why Is Lake Kussharo So Shallow? This is a low-angle night view photo taken from the front of Tokyo Tower. I took a long exposure of 20 seconds so that the lights and brake lights of the cars could leave a beautiful afterimage. The lens is Z14-30f/4S. Since it is a wide angle, I was able to see the whole thing even from directly under the tower.
