Nature Contact Lecture Series at Kawayu Visitor Center
Kawayu Visitor Center will host two lectures in the Nature Contact series.
In October, Tomoko Yoshikawa, Professor Emerita of the Faculty of Agriculture at Tamagawa University, will present “Life in Volcanic Lakes: Ecological Connections of Lake Kussharo.” In December, Mitsuhiro Nakagawa, Researcher and Specially Appointed Professor in the Faculty of Science at Hokkaido University, will give a talk titled “Why Is Lake Kussharo So Shallow? The Secrets of Atosanupuri Volcano Revealed by Recent Research.”


Our region spreads around the Kussharo Caldera, shaped by major volcanic activity. Lake Kussharo, Japan’s largest caldera lake, stands as a symbol of Akan-Mashu National Park and has nurtured a wide variety of life thanks to volcanic bounty.



To take a fresh look at this special lake and share its appeal and origins, we planned these two lectures. First, an exploration of the lake’s connections with its living creatures; second, a clear explanation of volcanic findings uncovered by recent research, delivered gently by each expert.



We hope that encountering the grand natural story behind the familiar landscape of Lake Kussharo will give you a deeper understanding of and pride in the lake and the park.

Unshū Kiln sits in a small seaside settlement where you can hear the surf, roughly halfway along the road that leads to the Tomioka Peninsula in Reihoku.
One late-summer day I visited the kiln owner, Ms. Miyoshi, a friendly person who always carries a light, cheerful air.

For this Autumn Kiln Tour, alongside Unshū Kiln’s staple vessels, you will see works using the vivid red cinnabar (shinsa) pigment, a color believed since the Jomon Period to ward off evil.

Also noteworthy are charming pieces inspired by Amakusa sea urchins. They appeared a few years ago and have returned for this Autumn Kiln Tour after a long absence.

During the exhibition the kiln will sell succulents including cacti, and offer painting-on-ware experiences. Please drop by—unexpected encounters and discoveries await you.

The 3rd “Amakusa Reihoku Literary Walk” tourism route creation workshop was held🎊


On September 25, the third workshop was held in Reihoku to develop a sightseeing walking route that turns literary spots and heritage in Reihoku Town into new tourist resources, allowing visitors to enjoy the “Literary Treasures of Reihoku.”✨


This third session focused on taking a deeper look at writers connected to Reihoku Town. Participants researched as if they were actually guiding tours and presented their findings to one another. Each participant’s guide showed a unique personality, making for an absorbing time.👏



The final, fourth workshop is planned for late October to early November♪


We will hold a fun workshop to exchange opinions based on the walking route proposals and guide manual developed from previous workshops, so please join us.👀

This year the event took place indoors because of rain, which concentrated the excitement! 🔥
The audience was closer to the performance, creating an even more immersive experience 👍

Here is today’s update on the spider lilies in Hyuga.
In the Araimizu area they continue to bloom beautifully, as they did last week. If you are driving, please use the temporary parking lot at the Human Resources Development Center.
The grounds of Hinata Yakushi appear to have just passed their peak viewing period.
Along the walking path behind the Hinata Yakushi bus stop, the flowers have also started to fade slightly.
This walking path’s gate is open from 7:00 to 17:00.

A trip to Kujukuri Beach for a one-year-old. It was my first time in the sea, but I was not afraid to play on the sand and rush into the sea.

The higanbana I saw while running in the Mountainous Area of Ryujin, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, and the lilac tsurubo flowers blooming below are also cute.

It seems that it will be a while before you can eat new Soba in the Soba field of Ryujin, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture.

A Project in Cooperation with Shanti Volunteer Association

"The Power of Books, the Power to Live"

Through books, start close to home and then look toward the world—

Under that concept, with the help of two people from Myanmar who live in Nishiokoppe Village, we created translated picture books to send to Myanmar.

What kind of country is Myanmar?
What is its situation right now?

First, we spent time learning about Myanmar.
Then we held picture-book readings in Japanese and Burmese.

After enjoying the differences in Burmese and Japanese pronunciation, it was time to make the translated picture books.

Using a Burmese kana comparison chart, we cut and pasted Burmese translation stickers onto every page, repeating the process.

At the end, they taught us how to write our own names in Burmese.

Having two people who speak Burmese meant we could ask questions when we lost track of where stickers should go, and learn things that you can’t get from reading materials alone, such as stroke order.

Thanks to them, we felt Burmese become more familiar to us.

The translated picture books we made that day will reach Myanmar around next summer.

We entrusted the books to the Shanti Volunteer Association while wondering what Myanmar will be like then and what we ourselves will be doing at that time.
