[Bicycle Diary] This morning, just as we opened the counter, two inbound guests came to rent bicycles. They wanted to ride around the Mikata Five Lakes, so we added them to the cycling tour originally planned for tourism association members. Everyone cycled slowly together, enjoying the nature. Partway through, there was a fuss about a tire losing air, and a nearby person kindly lent us a pump, which was a big help. They had already been staying in Japan for several nights and visiting many places, and they were very pleased with the Mikata Five Lakes, so it likely became a wonderful memory for them.

Sagaki Kuniyoshi Castle 1. The impregnable fortress that stopped the invading Asakura forces 2. The “stone-walled castle” revealed by archaeological excavations 3. The castle ruins’ seasonal colors and the breathtaking views of Wakasa visible from the site Kuniyoshi Castle was a mountain fortress in Sagaki, in the eastern part of Mihama Town. During the Sengoku period it served as a border castle guarding the boundary between Wakasa Province and Tsuruga Province. It is said that Awaya Echizen no Kami Katsuhisa, a senior retainer of the Takeda clan, the shugo daimyo of Wakasa, rebuilt the old castle in Kōji 2 (1556). The siege that made Kuniyoshi famous, the “Kuniyoshi Siege,” began in Eiroku 6 (1563) when the castle repelled an invasion by the Asakura clan of Echizen. Until the Asakura’s fall in Tenshō 1 (1573), the Asakura forces launched attacks almost every year, and the Awaya-led defenders sheltered in Kuniyoshi Castle and repelled them without the castle ever falling. An old tale by the local samurai Tanabe Handaifu Yasutsugu, who took part in the defense, spread as the military chronicle Kuniyoshi Kōjōki. Incidentally, the castle had been called Sagaki Castle at the time, but the name Kuniyoshi Castle became established after the spread of Kuniyoshi Kōjōki. In Genki 1 (1570), the castle welcomed Oda Nobunaga and his 30,000-strong army en route to attack the Asakura. According to Kuniyoshi Kōjōki, Nobunaga—who entered the castle with Kinoshita Tokichiro, later known as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Akechi Mitsuhide, this year’s Taiga drama protagonist—met with and praised Katsuhisa and the local samurai who had endured the siege. Later, in Tenshō 11 (1583), Kimura Hitachi no Suke, a vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, became lord of the castle and developed the castle town. This town became the origin of the present Sagaki settlement and prospered as a post town on the Tango Kaido during the Edo period. The streets still retain strong traces of that era. The castle was abandoned when Sakai Tadakatsu replaced the Kyogoku clan as lord of Obama Domain in Kan’ei 11 (1635) in the early Edo period, and the Sakaki-machi Bugyōsho was built to the south of the site. On that site the Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle History Museum opened in Heisei 21 (2009). Designated a town historic site in Shōwa 58 (1983), Kuniyoshi Castle ruins are a local historical asset. Archaeological excavations that began in fiscal 2000 to preserve and utilize the site had assumed that the Sengoku-period mountain fortress that repelled the Asakura onslaught remained largely intact. However, the investigations uncovered large groups of foundation stones for buildings, stone walls showing traces of deliberate demolition—upper halves uniformly removed and lower halves buried—massive foundation and facing stones at the northwest gate of the mountain-top main bailey, and building remains on the southern corner earthwork of the main bailey that suggest a tenshu or similar structure, dramatically changing the image of Kuniyoshi Castle. These remains are thought to result from major renovations by Kimura Hitachi no Suke, a Toyotomi daimyo who remodeled the castle to display his authority as the new lord, although no written records mentioned such work. The excavations thus revealed the previously unknown truth. In Heisei 29 (2017), Kuniyoshi Castle was selected as one of the Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles by the Japan Castle Foundation. In spring, cherry trees blooming in the castle town of Sagaki and the iris-like shaga that color the ruins greet visitors; in summer, colonies of hanashōbu (semi-aquatic plants) turn the leaves pale; in autumn, the maple leaves at Shourenji and Tokushoji Temple glow red; and in winter a silver landscape spreads across the site. A paved trail leads to the main bailey, but the zigzagging slope seems endless, giving visitors a real sense of the castle’s former impregnability. At last, when you reach the main bailey, the grand natural scenery of Wakasa and its beautiful vistas welcome you and make you forget the effort it took to get there.
