The Yukata Is an Essential Item of Clothing for Summer Festivals and Hot Spring Trips! Learn the Tips and Tricks of Putting on a Yukata! We’ll Teach You How!

Let's Try on a Traditional Japanese Yukata! This video "Yukata and Obi (帯) belt fitting tutorial by hataori(自分でできる浴衣の着付けと帯結び by hataori)" was created by Official Hataori and shows you in detailed steps how to put on a yukata and obi belt. Yukata are traditional garments that have been worn and loved by Japanese people for centuries. There are several occasions when one can wear a yukata, such as during summer festivals when women dress in gorgeous, colorful yukata or at hot springs or public baths where men tend to wear more plain and simply decorated yukata. However, as they aren't worn very often, there aren't many people who know the correct way to put on a yukata by themselves. This video will teach you in detail how to correctly put on a yukata. Hopefully this video comes in handy the next time you have the opportunity to wear a yukata! The History of Japan's Yukata Photo:Women wearing yukata It is thought that over 1200 years ago, during the Heian Period (794-1185AD), yukata were worn as bathrobes called Yukatabira (湯帷子). Aristocrats at the time would have worn them as they bathed. During the Muromachi Period (1336-1573AD) and Edo Period (1603-1868 AD) lightweight, cotton versions of these bathrobes were worn not during, but after bathing. During the latter half of the Edo Period, it became common for people to wear yukata as more casual clothing such as when taking short trips. Tips on How to Wear a Yukata Source :YouTube screenshot From 0:22 in the video you can see how to put on a yukata. There are many small items that are essential for women when putting on a yukata, such as a Datejime (伊達締), Obiita (帯板), Obi, Obihimo (帯紐), Geta (下駄) or Zori (草履). It helps to have clips or belts to help hold things in place when putting on your yukata and also helps prevent the yukata from falling out of place. One very important item when putting on your yukata is a Koshihimo (腰紐), a cord tied around the waist that helps adjust the length of your yukata. The most elegant way to wear a yukata is to adjust the length so that the yukata is just covering the ankles. Please refer to 0:55 in the video to see how to tie a Koshihimo. When wearing a kimono, an extra layer of clothing called a Hadajuban (肌襦袢) is worn underneath the kimono. However, this is unnecessary when wearing a yukata. Source :YouTube screenshot From 3:00 in the video, you can see how to put on a Munehimo (cord wrapped around the chest area). Once the yukata is in place, it's time to wrap the Obi belt. You can see this from 5:59 in the video. For more detailed information on how to tie an obi belt, please refer to the instructions in the video. We recommended wearing your hair in a refreshing up-do when wearing a yukata. A handheld Japanese fan, such as a Sensu (扇子) or Uchiwa (団扇), also looks great with a yukata. How to Tie an Obi Belt Photo:Kimono belt There are a variety of ways to tie an obi belt. For women who are wearing a colorful yukata in the summer to a special event such as a fireworks display, we recommended tying the obi in a ribbon shape using the Bunko musubi (文庫結び) or Chou musubi (蝶結び). Once you are used to tying an obi belt, you can attempt the more difficult Hana musubi (花結び). The Kakuobi musubi (角帯結び) style of obi is typically worn by men. Yukata Fitting Summary Photo:Women wearing yukata In summer, you will find many stores selling yukata sets and there are also places where you can rent a yukata for the day. If you choose to rent a yukata, there may be someone who can help you get dressed into it, so please take advantage of this opportunity. Taking a walk outside wearing a yukata, especially one you managed to put on yourself, is sure to be a great feeling! Please make sure to use this video the next time you decide to wear a yukata! Just watching the video we're sure you'll learn something new! -

From here, vegetables are trimmed of their stems and roots to prevent soil and dirt from entering the lunchroom. 5. Food Prep (3:25) The cooks wash the vegetables under running water at least three times and measure and wrap seasonings. They also write the name of the menu item they will be used with on the package, so there are no mistakes. When touching meat or fish, the cooks wear a special apron and always wear disposable gloves. When breaking eggs, the cooks put them in a small container one at a time to make sure there are no shells or blood in them before moving them to a larger container. You can see a quiz taking place at 4:25 in the video. Check it out! 6. Cooking (The video 5:06) In Suginami, even large quantities of vegetables are cut by hand one by one. Allergy Check (8:39) Children with allergy are provided an allergy-free meal. They check very carefully and make sure that there will be no mistake. 8. Taste-testing (9:11) 30 minutes before serving school lunch, the principle of the school checks the taste, quantity, if it's cooked adequately and checks for foreign objects. 9.Distribution (9:46) The food is weighed according to the number of people in the class and distributed. 10. 1966年の東京の姿を動画紹介 こちらで紹介する動画は「MichaelRogge」が公開した「Everyday life in bygone days in Tokyo, 1966 昭和東京」です。 -

Use a chopstick rest here too. 【#12】Oshikomi-bashi (1:18) This is to push the food into your mouth with your chopsticks. Proper etiquette entails that, once your bring your chopsticks towards a dish, you eat it. 【#14】Saguri-bashi (1:31) This refers to using your chopsticks to rummage through your dish to find the food you like. Avoid doing this by eating what is at the top of your dish. 【#15】Hiroi-bashi (1:38) This refers to passing food between chopsticks. This is something done at funerals and should also be avoided. If you want to share food with someone, pass it to their plate directly, or have them bring it to their plate directly. 【#16】Kakikomi-bashi (1:45) This is the act of holding a bowl to your mouth and shoveling food in quickly. It's respectful to take your time eating, to show that you are savoring the flavors. Making Worn-Out Graters Look Like New - Techniques of a Grater Repairman Source :YouTube screenshot The video introduces Takashi Teshigawara, the repairman at Kosuge, a hardware workshop in Tokyo, from 0:38. He has over 56 years of experience as a craftsman, and his skillful techniques can make damaged copper graters shine like new. Although the teeth on the surface of the grater are called eyes, repairing a grater is called re-toothing. Copper is a material that is easily affected by oxidation and other factors, so the edges of eyes become damaged over time. A skilled repairman can repair the damaged eyes using all kinds of techniques. The Repair Process of Graters Source :YouTube screenshot First, boil the old rusty grater, polish it properly, getting rid of stains left behind by radishes, ginger, wasabi, and any other vegetables. This process can be seen from 3:06 in the video. Next, the copper part of the grater is tapped with a hammer and roasted over fire to polish its surface. At last, a chisel is used to clean and sharpen the eyes of the grater. It takes a lot of time to clean and sharpen the flattened grater eyes. Through these techniques even the most worn-out graters will look like new. The finished grater can be seen from 7:37 in the video. Summary of Japan's Grater Repairmen Source :YouTube screenshot As you can see in the video, many Japanese tools have been repeatedly repaired by craftsman and used for many years. There are many artisans with expert skills who can repair various types of tools to the point that they look brand new. Check out the video to see the amazing work of one craftsman doing just that. -

About Grand Seiko This video is "Inside Grand Seiko, Episode One: The Master Craftsman" produced by "Hodinkee". It is a valuable video that shows us the state and production process of the workshop that makes the world-class precision watches "Grand Seiko." The commitment of these Watchmaker's cannot be overlooked! The Japanese Micro-Artist Studio Behind Grand Seiko Watches Source :YouTube screenshot Seiko Epson's Shiojiri office in the Koshinetsu region and the Suwa region of Nagano prefecture, introduced in this video, was established with the aim of inheriting the techniques of the watchmaker "Micro Artist Studio." "Every one must be beautiful," says watchmaker Yoshifusa Nakazawa, a watch assembler who continues to produce watches in this studio (0:50 in the video). Mr. Nakazawa has been active as a watch assembler since joining the company in 1978, and in 1981 won the World Skills Competition in Japan. In this workshop, the assembly of the movement (the part that controls the driving of the wristwatch), the installation of the dial, and the case insertion are all performed consistently, so that steps such as maintenance and overhaul can be easily performed. From 1:06 of the video, you can see how precisely each watch is assembled, sometimes using a microscope. What Is Grand Seiko's Original Mechanism the "Spring Drive"!? Source :YouTube screenshot The mechanism “spring drive” mounted on Grand Seiko, which can be seen from 2:51 in the video, is said to be a third engine that combines machinery and quartz. It has a history of 20 years as a model symbolizing the Grand Seiko brand. The model called "44GS" established the design of Seiko style in 1967. It lists three policies, which are as follows: 1. Design consisting of a plane and quadratic surface, with a plane as the main body. Cubic surfaces are not used in principle. 2. Increase the area of the flat surface as much as possible over all cases, dials and hands. 3. In principle, each surface is a mirror surface, and distortion from each mirror surface is minimized as much as possible. Based on this policy, the 44GS was designed with nine features. This Seiko style is designed to spice up the beauty of Japan. It considers the "light" of Japanese people, and those who hold it can feel the beauty of the Japanese in its undistorted, flat planes. Grand Seiko can be called a work packed with the aesthetic sense of Japan. The Asteroid Surveying Spacecraft "Hayabusa 2" This video, titled "「Hayabusa 2」CG Conceptual Video of Touchdown/"Hayabusa2" CG Animation"(「はやぶさ2」タッチダウン想像図CG/"Hayabusa2" CG Animation), was released by "Jaxa | Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency." “Hayabusa 2,” introduced in the video, is an asteroid surveying spacecraft developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA as a successor to the spacecraft “Hayabusa.” This video introduces JAXA’s CG video of Hayabusa 2 touching down on the asteroid Ryugu and retrieving a surface sample. It's only a conceptual video; however, the plan of Hayabusa 2’s touchdown is visualized in an easy-to-understand manner. The basic settings and touchdown methods of the “Hayabusa 2” are the same as its predecessor, Hayabusa; however, the spacecraft has been significantly improved and the ion engine and antenna surroundings have been greatly augmented. The news that this groundbreaking mission was successful also attracted a lot of attention around the world. Incidentally, “Hayabusa” is also used as the project name for JAXA’s asteroid survey project. The Touchdown of Hayabusa 2 Source :YouTube screenshot The first “Hayabusa” mission’s goal was to bring back rock samples from asteroids for the first time ever. The mission succeeded, and the return of “Hayabusa” received praise from all around the world; in Japan, it received so much attention that it was made into a movie. Whereas the first Hayabusa was an experimental machine, Hayabusa 2, shown in the footage, collected samples from the surface of an asteroid which has organic matter and water on it. And the developmental process differs from its predecessor in that it was designed to collect surface samples from an asteroid with organic matter and water to obtain clues about the existence of rare metals and the mystery of the birth of life. The survey plan of the “Hayabusa 2” was also carefully scheduled. The “Hayabusa 2” was launched from the Tanegashima Space Center Large Rocket Launch Site in 2014 to coincide with the timing of when the asteroid Ryugu would be closest to the Earth. Source :YouTube screenshot As you can see from 1:09 in the video, once the spacecraft has come into the closest proximity with the asteroid Ryugu, they first launch an impactor command with the goal of creating a crater on the surface of Ryugyu to make it easier for Hayabusa 2 to land. This impactor command was named "Explorer" after the world’s first satellite series. Hayabusa 2 will attempt to touch down after taking rock samples scattered in the vicinity during the second Explorer launch. A small rover was also placed on the asteroid Ryugu, which collected as many surface samples as possible after touchdown and returned to Earth by fully autonomous operation. Summary of Hayabusa 2's Touchdown Mission Source :YouTube screenshot The Ryugu project was featured on NHK as a special program and was also broadcast overseas. It was very well received abroad, and managed to attract attention from all over the world. The success of Hayabusa 2's touchdown mission is said to be an incredible feat. iPS Cells: The World's Leading Regenerative Medicine This is a video released in 2018 by the "Hitachi Brand Channel" that introduces the efforts of Japanese company Hitachi Kobe Lab, in Regenerative Medicine using iPS cells. Speaking of regenerative medicine, the 3D iPS cell culture method invented by Professor Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University's Institute for iPS Cell Research and Development won the Nobel Prize in 2012, and it has become a hot topic of conversation. So what is this regenerative medicine? We'll give you a rundown. Photo:Research Regenerative Medicine is a technique that reanimates cells in areas damaged (or lost) by illness or injury. This has made it possible to treat incurable diseases that are difficult to treat with current medicine. Professor Yamanaka had been studying regenerative medicine for some time, but in contrast to the conventional method which required the use of fertilized eggs, human iPS cells, which can be cultured from a sterile egg, solved the ethical issues and attracted attention as a new dawn in medical technology. However, iPS cells have weaknesses. It is difficult to stabilize the quality of iPS cells and to mass-produce them. Maintaining the sterility of the lab was a critical challenge for culturing stable, quality iPS cells, especially since they are less resistant to bacteria. The Future of Hitachi's Regenerative Medicine, Opened up by Open Innovation Source :YouTube screenshot Due to the difficulty of culturing iPS cells, Hitachi began development of Automated Cell Culture Equipment for iPS cells through joint research with Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma. Currently, Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Chemical are also participating in the research and have been successful in producing reputable induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). The greatest benefit of open innovation is that, rather than a single company monopolizing research, specialists in each field, with their own specialties, can come together to conduct research and development without being bound by interests. The services and products, created through the combined strength of the Hitachi Group's technology and Japan's top minds, will continue to lead the world's medical infrastructure in the future. The Automated Cell Culture Equipment for iPS cells is one such development. The Regenerative Medicine that Hitachi is currently working on is said to be second-generation, but if it can incorporate AI technology and achieve more stable iPS cell culturing, it's possible to break through to third-generation regenerative medicine technology and raise hopes in the future, as it could be applied to the treatment of other incurable diseases. Japan’s Cutting-Edge AI Technologies Contribute to an Aging Society This video is titled "A New Aging Society Led by Japanese Technology" (日本のテクノロジーが導く新しい高齢化社会). It introduces Japan's response to an aging society using cutting-edge technology. It was released by the“Foreign Ministry / MOFA”. Currently, Japan is said to be one of the most aging societies in the world. However, an aging society is not an issue unique to Japan, but a problem growing worldwide. Living a long, healthy life and increasing opportunities to participate in society is a very important theme when faced with an aging society. In this article, we'll introduce some cutting-edge technologies in Japan that the public and private sectors are developing together. NEC the WISE: An AI Technology Adapting to an Aging Society Source :YouTube screenshot The AI technology shown in the video at 0:32 is called “NEC the WISE.” In the video, NEC Director Fellow Katsumi Emura says “the problem is not the aging society itself, but how to adapt to an aging society, so that people can live long, healthy, fulfilling lives.” In light of the global trend toward an aging society, NEC is focused on developing and providing solutions that can be used to predict and prevent various diseases. That's what the AI technology, “NEC the WISE,” is all about. If we can prevent people from getting sick as they get older, it means that people will still be able to participate in society in good health as they age. In today's society where we are told that we have 100 years to live, "retirement in our 60s" is too early. If it becomes the norm for people to remain healthy and active past 60, we will no longer be able to call it an "aging society." HAL Lumbar Support: An AI Technology That Addresses the Declining Birthrate and Aging Population Source :YouTube screenshot With Japan's declining birthrate and aging population, the age of caregivers, whose job it is to care for the sick and elderly, is increasing every year. The "HAL Lumber Support" project, which can be seen at 1:02 in the video, is a project to introduce nursing care robots to reduce the physical burden on caregivers in the nursing care industry. The video introduces AI technology that places an assistive robot suit on a caregiver's waist and receives biopotential signals emitted by the brain and transmits them to the power-assist suit to reduce the strain on the back and lower body. This is an AI technology that can be applied patient side as well. In addition, because HAL is an artificial intelligence (AI) equipped support robot, repeated use of the robot helps it learn how neurotransmission works and can assist in walking more efficiently. It's not just a robot that moves according to commands, it's an autonomous machine that learns on its own, meaning that the cyborg robots you see in science fiction movies are already a reality. These mechanized technologies are collectively referred to as Hybrid Assistive Limb” (HAL). Summary of Japan's Cutting-Edge AI Technology and Measures for an Aging Society As seen at the end of the video from 1:30, Japan’s cutting-edge technology “HAL” is already being applied to medical technology in Malaysia. It is believed that increased social participation opportunities for the elderly with the help of autonomous robots will increase the well-being of society. It'll be interesting to see what Japan, the superpower of robots, has to offer in the future. 【Official Website】Cutting-Edge AI Technologies – NEC the WISE - : Solution/ Service | NEC https://www.nec.com/ -

One of the most frequently asked questions foreign travelers to Japan have when wanting to visit an onsen is whether or not it's okay to enter onsen with tattoos. Unfortunately, the answer to this is generally no. The reason for this is tattoos in Japan have long been associated with criminal organizations. In the past, criminals in Japan were even marked with a tattoo so that they could be easily identified. That being said, there are some onsen in Japan where you can enter with tattoos. Furthermore, there are places that allow you to enter as long as you cover up your tattoos. This can be done with special bandages and sprays sold in Japan. Unfortunately, some places won't let you enter even if you offer to cover up tattoos. In this case, there's not much you can do, and you're better off just finding a new place. It shouldn't be hard though with how many onsen there are in Japan. The Different Types of Onsen in Japan Photo:A bulletin board with health benefits written on it at Kinosaki Onsen(写真しゃしん:城崎温泉きのさきおんせん・効能こうのうが書かかれた掲示板けいじばん) Japan's onsen are said to be good for one's health, but there are many different types of onsen in Japan, and they all have slightly different health benefits. Below we'll introduce some of the different types of onsen in Japan. Standard, transparent hot springs with a small amount of minerals. Hot springs that contain salt and are good for muscle and joint pain. Hot springs that contain sulfates.
